Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Lee.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Lee. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in a real estate family — my parents were real estate investors. They purchased homes and apartments that they also managed. That taught me a LOT!
A couple of years after graduating from college and moving to Atlanta, I mimicked what my parents did in Michigan and began buying apartments. Things went well until the crash and recession of 2008. Most of my tenants lost their jobs and could not pay and then ALL of my properties lost their value in what felt like was overnight. I felt like I was drowning, so I had to find a different way to supplement my income.
I was “young and dumb” in my twenties, so I mistakenly thought being a real estate agent would be the right and stable career decision during the REAL ESTATE crash. Go figure! All I can say is I was “young and dumb.” As a new real estate agent, the traditional methods of sales (cold calling, door knocking, etc.) were not working for me. I am not against those methods but they just weren’t working for me as the crash was ensuing. But I got on a little, fairly unknown network called Facebook (it was only a couple of years old and it was not close to what it is today). My business flourished so much so that I had to form a team to help me keep up with the leads I was generating.
My real estate brokers/managers at the time took notice of what I was doing and asked me to come in and do some trainings to help the other agents in the office. I come from a family of educators (my great-grandmother, grandmother, granddad, and mother all have been educators), so teaching for me is something I have always done and enjoyed, from teaching ESL to working with Sunday School children. As a result, I realized that my path in real estate would be best served to educate others.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Based on my journey, my advice is to follow YOUR instinct. Each of our journeys is our own and we often have a vision or a vantage point that other’s just cannot see. Just like in a car, the backseat driver may not see the conditions on the road like us as the driver, people in our lives, even if they mean well, can’t see all that we see. I remember several people flat-out discouraging me from using Facebook in its early days. They said, “that site is just for kids/teenagers”, “You need to focus on your number of calls” and the like. But on my journey, I have learned that there is more than “one way to skin a catfish” as the “old folks” would say.
As a result, all of my business teachings revolve around helping people to “get in where they fit” — to Profit with their Personality. I 100% believe that we all have very unique God-given giftings that when we “play to those strengths”, we flourish. I saw it happen in my life and I see it happen every day I work with a client who has that “lightbulb, aha” revelatory moment.
