Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Bomb Jahlaam.
DJ Bomb, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been involved in music for as long as I can remember. From hearing my parents play jazz & old school to my older brothers playing what we deem today as classic Hip-Hop & R&B. I got my start in the music world when my dad heard me singing as a kid and he enrolled me in an orchestra and the school chorus. I would remain singing throughout my formative years into my budding adulthood. The idea for DJ-ing arose when I began to watch some DJ’s that I knew in action. As a music lover, I was inspired and enthused. So, in my last year of college, I bought my first DJ controller from a friend who no longer needed it and I began to teach myself. I would literally be in school all day typing papers and what not. Then, I’d come home and practice for hours. This went on for a few months until I felt like I sounded good enough to be in public.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been smooth with a few humps & learning curves. I wouldn’t say I have struggled but I am figuring out how to brand myself. I play everything from Dance Pop to Old School R&B, so when you are versatile you have to make sure not to put yourself into a box. So, I make sure to show my versatility when I mix. For newly beginning DJ’s, I’d say learn how to DJ on different types of equipment (i.e. CDJ’s, 1200’s, controllers, etc.) because you’ll never know when you may have to use them. Also, learn the timing in songs. Learn how to count bars, that way you can time your transitions better. Don’t be afraid to speak on the mic! The more you do it, the better you become. Above all, be yourself. I know this sounds simple but do not try to excel in someone else’s style. Hone in on your DJ style and be the best at it.
Please tell us about your work.
I do lounges, local music artist shows, corporate holiday parties, concerts, birthdays, skating rinks, etc. I haven’t done a wedding just yet but that is on my bucket list for next year. I specialize in building the party up and keeping it going. This year, a lot of my events involved doing just that. I love relaxed settings, like a lounge or a networking mixer because you can make the vibes really mellow. As far as what sets me apart, I am known for blending music together regardless of it’s it new or old or two different genres, in a way that is smooth. So that the transition is like butter, lol. I’ve heard more than once that people really enjoy my versatility. I’m proud of what I have accomplished so far this year. I’ve created so many great relationships, met some great people, learned to brand myself, learned new equipment and more. In the process, this has actually helped me to grow as an individual.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I have some DJ’s that I really admire that inspired me to learn. I taught myself how to DJ though. I’d say if you want a mentor, approach the DJ’s who seem really interested in you and your progress. I think they will be most eager to help you on your way. When you network, network across the board: artists, venue owners, other DJ’s, etc. Do it even when you don’t feel like it because opportunities don’t always come back around. I’ve had people ask me to DJ for them as soon as I hand them my business card so stay prepared. Remember, you are responsible for the fun but you are still a business. Be professional.
