Meet Greg Hendler of GMH Audio in Grant Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Hendler.

Greg, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been playing music in one form or another for most of my life. I come from a musical family and got started on piano lessons early on and by the time I was ten had moved to play electric guitar. I started experimenting with recording my own music in high school and in college, began recording my friend music and delving deeper into audio production. I attended graduate school at Georgia Tech for Music Technology where I learned what goes into building the tools used to make music and got the opportunity to work on projects designing instruments and creating music making software. After graduation, I wanted to stay in Atlanta and ended up taking a computer programming job while continuing to record and produce music for local bands on the side. Less than a year into that job, I had grown my musical side hustle into a full-fledged business and left that position to pursue music full time with GMH Audio, which I have been doing for the last year.

Has it been a smooth road?
There have been plenty of challenges along the way and I am sure there will be much more to come. I left a steady paycheck to work for myself and with that comes a certain level of instability. I had lots of experience recording music but have had to learn the ins-and-outs of running a small business along the way.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with GMH Audio – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
GMH Audio is my recording studio but it is also where I bring together my love for the creative and technical sides of making music to help other musicians bring their projects to life. I have a been playing music for most of my life and y education gave me a deep understanding of the technology that produces, records, and processes sound which I leverage when making decisions in the studio and also use to create my own music production software tools.

I specialize in recording rock music, anything with live drums and guitar is where I love to be. I think it is great when bands will bring in their own amps and drum kits and we can craft a sound that brings the feel of their live show to a recording. My goal is to make musicians sound like the absolute best version of themselves and for each recording to have a character unique to that artist. I offer tracking, mixing, and mastering either a la carte or as a full production service to take something all the way from demo to a mastered record.

There are so many talented musicians in Atlanta and I am honored to know so many great artists and to help lift up their music and bring it out to the world. I am also so grateful that I have been able to turn my passion into my business. It has been about a year since I left a computer programming job to pursue GMH Audio full time. In that time, I have worked on albums for some of my favorite local artists and my software has been featured in industry magazines and blogs.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The local music community in Atlanta is amazing. It seems like every day I’m hearing about new bands and there are lots of great venues to see live, local music. I also love the way each neighborhood in Atlanta has a unique vibe and there is lots of diversity which in my opinion help makes for better art, not to mention better food. If I had to complain about anything about the city, it is cliche, but it has to be the traffic. If you need to take the highway during the daylight hours be prepared to stop and go, and Atlanta drivers have an every-man-for-himself attitude which compounds the overcrowding of the roads. I have gotten used to it but it does require some extra time planned it to get anywhere.
