Check out Megan Benitez’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Benitez.

Megan, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I began my artistic endeavors as a child by simply drawing. I always loved realistic pencil drawings of people and words more than anything. I was also a performing cheerleader and competed in beauty pageants, so I began to experiment with makeup around the same time as drawing and I fell in love. By high school, I was putting my skills to work as an artist doing makeup for friends, coworkers, and family, as well as painting pictures and occasionally murals for local businesses. In 2013 I started attending SCAD as a Graphic Design major, but after taking a Photo class at the end of 2014, I changed my major to Photography. Throughout my time at SCAD I used my skills as a makeup artist to my advantage doing the hair and makeup for my own shoots as well as for many other students various projects, but importantly I was able to experiment with various different forms and practices of photography. Today I am working independently as a freelance artist in Atlanta doing makeup and photography.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why? And what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Working as a freelance artist, a lot of the work I do is dependent upon what the client is wanting, however I do make time to create work that I want to make and I am happiest when I am able to use myself as my subject and have the freedom to create imagery that I love. My personal work focuses around my own personal life and my love for cosmetics and beauty. Sometimes I make very surrealistic imagery using makeup and Photoshop. I don’t have a particular style because it changes with my moods and it evolves as I change in life as well.

What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
I actually wouldn’t necessarily recommend going to school for art. Depending on what you’re doing and what your goals are of course, but I personally think you can learn a lot more for a lot less money just from searching the internet and educating yourself and by injecting yourself into environments and groups where people you aspire to be like or learn from are present. I’ve learned way more from friends and creatives online than I did in school for sure.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
To support me you can follow me on Instagram @megbenitez. Most of my current work will be posted there. If it gets posted anywhere, that is where it will be first. I also have a website, www.megbenitez.tumblr.com, that I use for my past and fairly recent work.
