Art & Life with Dr. Asha

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Asha.

Dr. Asha, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
At 32, my parents still tease me about how much I loved to talk growing up!! However, people are often surprised to find out that I am actually an Introvert.

About five years ago, I learned that I am an “INTJ” or “Architect,” according to Myers-Briggs personality types. I ask questions because I enjoy the journey we take to get to the answer. I think deeply about who we are, why we are, and where we are. Then I process these thoughts through meaningful conversations, both written and spoken.

Couple this intrigue with my background in chiropractic, passion for wellness, and experiences as a college educator, and there are endless conversations to be had!! Over time, this gift for creating healthy conversations turned into professional speaking engagements, a radio show, newspaper articles, magazine articles, and a book!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a Creator of Healthy Conversations. Recently, I have noticed that these conversations are growing beyond my individual capacity. One of my four life mantras is “Community Over Competition.” So I created a platform for other speakers/educators who align with the Six Dimensions of Wellness to create healthy conversations as well. Beyond food and fitness—we empower people to embrace their spiritual, physical, emotional-mental, career, social, and intellectual selves. As such, my wellness agency, The Temple Fit Company, LLC, has become the living room of healthy conversations!

Reflecting on this, I would say that creating healthy conversations is both my art and my calling. It is why I keep little notebooks in practically every room of the house, my car, and my purse. It is why I pay Google $1.99 a month for extra storage on my Google Drive. It is why I have hundreds of voice notes on my phone, and the “you’re running dangerously low on space” message is permanently etched into my notification bar. Everything points to this one life goal: Inspire the busy and overwhelmed to live life abundantly.

What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
As a self-employed chiropractor, professional speaker, and writer—I totally get it! Our drive can unintentionally push us into a cave of productivity. However, when we are alone, we lose our accountability, encouragement, and even ourselves.

I have made a point to insert myself into various local communities. As a natural introvert, it can get difficult, but I am careful not to make any compromises in this area. Communities that have significantly impacted me are my church, my sorority (Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.), and the “Women Wednesdays” network of entrepreneurial women based in Tallahassee, FL. All of these groups meet on a weekly to monthly basis, which is great for continuity and consistency.

Additionally, with the mantra “Community over Competition” in mind, I created a collective called “Women in Wellness.” WiW is modeled after the Inklings, which gave us C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, among other legendary creatives. We meet monthly to vent, support, share best practices, and grow in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Engaging with this group of women helps me fight off depressing thoughts like, “I’m in this alone” and “I’m just going to give up and find a ‘normal’ job.” So, whether it’s a pre-established community or a community you have to create yourself, it’s critical for your wellness and your work that you intentionally connect [and do so regularly].

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
While I enjoy creating healthy conversations; admittedly, I need to do much better at cataloging these experiences. After years of conversing on various platforms—I finally put together a snapshot of content when my intern told me, “If more people heard what you had to say, it would change their lives…and yours. “

So I share my thoughts at www.doctorasha.com/portfolio. My book Eat, Drink, Do is available there, as well as links to published articles and video clips from various engagements. (Although, the way social media is set up, the clips on my “Dr. Asha” Facebook page keep the conversations a little more fresh.) I’m in the process of writing my second book (Yay!), and I look forward to adding her to the portfolio when she is published. People can visit the Dr. Asha website to book me for upcoming events. And they can head to www.templefit.co to book speakers from our Temple Fit Co. family.

Our drive can unintentionally push us into a cave of productivity. Yezzzzzzzzzz I have been there and used to think that it was the only way to get it done–the old if it is to be it’s up to me mindset—-but i was robbing other women of opportunity to share their brilliance with me and vise versa—one of my favorite outlets away from home is cardio class I dance with the ladies and it’s one big stress relieving party! Power to the introverts!
