Today we’d like to introduce you to Chaunta Flucas.
Chaunta, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I was a child – and until I got to college – I wanted to be a Pediatrician. When I enrolled in my first anatomy and physiology class, I found out I had to dissect human body parts, which was a major problem since I had a fear of death. I never thought for one second that I would have to do something like this because I was focused on taking care of babies!
Since I didn’t have a backup plan, I spent the next 15 years of my life trying to find something else to do. I gained a lot of experience along the way; however, I struggled to find a career that was fulfilling. One detail (dissecting human body parts) changed everything for me, and I figured I was not the only person who has had this experience. That realization turned into the creation of the Get to Work!TM Program.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Developing the program was easy, but facilitating the program has been difficult because we are a for profit organization, and most of the organizations who serve our initial target audience don’t have additional funding for outside programs. Therefore, we have had to create an additional program and restructure our business model to broaden our reach.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Get to Work offers career and workforce development programs, in addition to personal career coaching. We offer the Get To Work!™ Job Readiness & Retention Program for individuals in need of learning and developing employability skills to increase the opportunity for achieving success in the workplace. This program is ideal for those who are entering the workforce for the first time, or reentering and need a refresher.
We also offer The I AM GREATER THAN™ Program which focuses on those who are on the path of changing careers or looking to advance in their current career. The curriculum focuses on the development of strategic résumés, elements of successful interviewing, career focus and planning, and more.
I am most proud of the relationships we are building in our communities. It is especially rewarding to work with young people and help them make solid decisions about their career choices. I am also proud that Get to Work is a Certified Woman-Owned Small Business!
What sets us apart from others is that we are not a typical “resume workshop” program. We aren’t in the business of just making sure someone has a resume. We dig deep to help people find what they are truly passionate about and create a plan to help them achieve their goals and spend their lives doing something they enjoy.
What were you like growing up?
As a child I was always silly; I loved to have fun and laugh. I was always very sociable and didn’t meet any strangers. My interests were health and science/astronomy. I could stand outside and stare at the sky for hours or watch medical shows on TV all day. I also loved to listen to music. I still love all of these things!
