Conversations with the Inspiring Alyssa Anderson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Anderson.

Alyssa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I taught myself to braid when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade and since then, I’ve been fascinated with hair. I constantly watched Tutorials and would just practice on myself. When I got to high school, I was the one who did all the prom and homecoming hair, I’d even do girls hair in the middle of class. I use hair as my creative outlet, my art. I’m only nineteen, so I have a lot to learn still but I push my self every day to try something new and to think outside the box.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This is definitely not a smooth road, being so young I have often not been taken seriously or have been taken advantage of. My advice is to know your worth and be confident. It took me a while to have confidence in my self and my abilities and I would often have people try to take advantage of those weaknesses, but now I feel as though I have set my self apart from others and don’t compare my self to others in this industry because everyone has their own unique style.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
As of right now, I only style hair, special events, music festivals etc. but I am in cosmetology school at Columbus Technical College. I specialize in braids. I feel that I’m known for my uniqueness in how I do hair, I love to make the hair big, messy and undone without it falling apart. I’m most proud that I just graduated high school and have had consistent business with weddings, proms, homecomings, and other special events.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I feel like women are not set up in society to succeed. There are still a lot of gender stereotypes even though our society claims we are equal, and the American workforce quite frankly does not support working mothers.
