Meet Tyler Jarvis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Jarvis.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’m a singer/songwriter from Atlanta by-way-of Cincinnati, OH. I grew up in the suburbs of Cincinnati, OH where I spent all of my childhood living with my parents and my younger brother Ian. When I was 13, I first discovered the thing that would change my life forever, and that was the guitar. I started playing guitar when I was 13 years old and instantly fell in love with it and playing music. I got my first real start playing music at church and slowly developed as a musician. As a young guitar player, I found myself looking up to great players like John Mayer and Eric Clapton for the fact that they were such great players, but they also had great songs. At the time I didn’t realize it but the songs, not the playing, were what made me inspired to keep digging into music. I continued to play through college and then found myself in Atlanta chasing down the dream of writing songs and singing them for people all over the world.

Please tell us about your art.
I’m a singer/songwriter, and I like to call my music “purposeful pop.” What I mean by this is, I like to find interesting and unique moments within my music, that might be considered “outside the box” to regular pop music. I create music that makes people feel something in their soul whether that be love, hope, deep sadness, nostalgia, etc. I love the beauty of human emotions and how integral to our day to day lives they are and I truly believe that it can be something that helps people through a time in their lives where they need to know they’re not the only ones who walk through certain situations. Whether that be heartbreak or great loss. Or whether they need a song to rejoice within excitement or great triumph. I want to be able to help give a voice to people and let them recognize that they’re not alone and that all of us are more similar than we are different. We all experience these emotions and circumstances and that we should let those things bring us together rather than tear us apart.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
What’s so unique about success is it’s relative to the person. For me, success looks like this…seeing a room full of people who have found hope and joy through my music or a live show is success to me. To see people from all walks of life, doing life together, and being in a moment together because of my music is the greatest success I could ever ask for. Aside from all the dream venues and crowds, this is the hope with my music.

In my opinion, the most essential quality/characteristic to success is being able to demand excellence and also produce it yourself. I talked about this in a blog post recently, but I think that there’s a connotation around the word excellence that can make it perceived as hard or intense. I don’t believe that’s true, and I think in fact that the world needs all of us to demand excellence from ourselves and those around us. Not to say it’s not okay to fail but to want to do the best at something you’ve been gifted in.
