Today we’d like to introduce you to Darvensky Louis.
Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Darvensky moved to the New Jersey in 2000, then to Georgia in 2009. In the year of 2012, a close friend named Kim Hebenstreit saw Darvensky dancing at church and begged him to take his dancing to the next level and train at The Royal Dance Academy on scholarship in Ballet, Modern, Jazz, and Hiphop. After he declined the offer several times he finally gave one class a shot and was hooked from there. He is currently a Dance Major at Kennesaw State University where he dances with the KSU Dance Company. During his time at KSU, he has had the opportunity to perform works by international and national choreographers including Ella-Ben Aharon, James Graham, Dr. Ivan Pulinkala, and Jon Carr. Darvensky received his hip-hop training from AJ Paug and Xavier Lewis, and found a love for learning and creating hip hop choreography, as well as other styles of dance. He has also learned from the hip-hop legend herself, Missy Elliot. He’s taught hip hop classes at studios like CK DanceWorks, North Atlanta Dance Academy, Terminus Modern Theatre, and Elite dance studios. Darvensky also studied abroad in May of 2018 to Israel with KSU Dance to study with the Batsheva Dance Company.
His dance training began at the age of 15 at The Royal Dance Academy under the direction of Sarah Johnson and Jay Johnson where he had a full scholarship to train with RDA for four years. Darvensky enjoys teaching and subbing for studios in the metro-Atlanta area. His artistry continues with videography as well. He started his own YouTube channel in 2011 where he creates his own videos for fun. After filming and editing a fellow students dance video for their senior project, John Welker, a now alumni from KSU Dance noticed Darvensky’s talent and passion for videography and asked him to join the team. Since then, he has produced numerous videos for TMBT that promote upcoming events, and showcase their works. Darvensky has also performed in a music video with director Otis Sallid called the “One life” project. Darvensky is excited to share his experience in videography, teaching, and performing on stage and on a teaching platform to inspire young dancers.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being one of the first in my family to follow dance as my career came with a huge responsibility to be great. Coming from a foreign country it took a lot of convincing my parents that dance is what I want to do for the rest of my life. Parents want their kid to follow a career that guarantees a comfortable way of living, so when they are no longer here they know that money would not be an issue.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Atlanta. Atlanta is the city that is slowly creeping up the list of one of the greatest city’s in the United States. Atlanta continues to breed many artist from musicians, dancers, actors and actresses. This city is growing everyday and I love being apart of that growth.
