Meet Lordea Childress of Lovebox Collection in College Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lordea Childress.

Lordea, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began to take art seriously in 6th grade and it also helped lessen the distance between myself and others. Thanks to my teachers throughout middle and high school, I entered competitions and participated in projects in the real world that opened my perspective on everything I could do as an artist. One of my most memorable achievements was winning state level in the reflections contest. It was just before I graduated high school and that moment to me meant that I still had a chance to reach others through art. It gave me hope and motivation to continue working.

My teachers in college drove me beyond my comfort and into the depths of myself. It was the most critical time of my life as an artist since I was forced to give up everything I thought made up my art style and identity in order to see the things in myself was overlooking.

After graduating, I became drawn to the underlying themes of intimacy and self-actualization through human interaction. It’s the theme of my life. Body language and altered human figures like in the works of Beksinski and Jesse Kanda are tools I use to communicate this subject matter.

Currently, I am a creative coordinator in Lovebox Collection. I met the CEO in college and the group has since produced the short film, ‘Vicious Aeon’ which was shown in a gallery last year. I’m very proud of where I am and I’m humbled by every opportunity to share my work and ideas. I can say that I am here because of my community and I hope to continue to explore ways of bringing us closer via understanding.

Has it been a smooth road?
One of my greatest struggles has been myself getting in my own way. An example is my experience in college in which I suddenly was introduced to a myriad of ideas and ways of manifesting those ideas. I was stubborn to surrender myself to the phrase “nothing is new” and didn’t research as much as I could have.

I learned that creating something involves not just the present but what was created before to create an open dialogue. Everything is a conversation.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Lovebox Collection – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am a creative coordinator in Lovebox Collection. Lovebox Collection is an independent platform for artists of various expressive and creative forms. We specialize in giving a voice to the groups that are typically overlooked. As a company, we are most proud of our ability to produce on our own terms and the emphasis on community through us working as a family. What sets us apart is our vulnerability in our art forms. We share what’s real to us.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like that Atlanta has a myriad of different kinds of people who are driven and believe in themselves. It’s a thriving world of its own. I don’t dislike anything enough to mention it.
