Today we’d like to introduce you to Teko Lewis.
Teko, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in a house where both of my parents were music lovers it is no surprise that I decided to take an interest in being an artist. I started out singing at a very young age, but the older I got the shyer I became so I decided to start playing the saxophone by the age of eleven. My thought process at that age was “If I play an instrument no one will ask me to sing”. Playing the saxophone grew my interest in producing in which audio engineering came shortly after. As cliche as it may sound, I got to where I am today by believing in myself. I wanted to be an artist and I knew that I needed to do whatever was needed to make that dream become a reality.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not at all, my road has been very bumpy. Starting out I lost my father at the age of 16. It was the most traumatic event I have had to endure in life alone and losing someone that is close to you it a battle within itself. Going through what I went through showed me that I needed to make whatever time I had on this earth mean something. One this that many people may not understand unless there are in the same circumstance is that every day as a business owner and entrepreneur is a struggle. Waking up every day you’re just trying to come up with a way to get your brand to the next level. Those days quickly become weeks, and sometimes even months and years of no callbacks. That’s alone is mentally draining and the only thing you can do it just hold on to that faith and try not to let the silence discourage you from reaching your goals. In the end, every struggle will be a testimony and it will be all worth it, just as long as you don’t give up.
Please tell us about Teko Lewis.
Through many name changes over the years, I came to the conclusion to brand myself simply as Teko Lewis, I Am Teko. I am a recording artist and producer, published model, and photographer. My proudest moment was being able to see my face in a magazine and my music on all of the streaming platforms such as Apple Music and Spotify. Those opportunities opened many more opportunities such as working with Grammy-nominated artist and even artist in other countries. My goal is to reach more people with my music and help someone get through something they are going through my way of expressing what I went through to let the person know that they are not alone and will get through what they are going through And I truly believe that what sets me apart from others. I put my all in everything I do to help others, I have an amazing story and I believe I am here to help people.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I started over, I would have started sooner. Though I am still very young, I spent most of my teenage years doubting when I could have gotten a head start on my career. By being afraid to invest in my dreams, who knows how many opportunities I missed out on by not taking that first step sooner.
