Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmin Walton.
Jasmin, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am a 23-year-old native of Birmingham, Al and a recent Graduate of Spelman College. I have been singing and in love with music since I was about four years old. Like many others, I found my love for it in the church. However, I didn’t really understand the importance of my gift until about the age of 15. Around that time, I became heavily involved in a youth choir that had a major impact on the view of ministry and artistry. I learned how much influence music had in my life and how it had the power to change the lives of those around me. At the age of 18, I joined a female acapella group called “201” that went viral and opened my eyes to the reality of the music industry. There were many memorable moments and amazing opportunities that came from the group, but I, also, learned quickly how the love of fame and money could change the purpose and heart of a thing created with pure intentions. Around the age of 20, I began to embark on the journey of personal ministry and, ultimately, ended up joining another group called “20/20”. It started as a group of friends that enjoyed singing together but, then turned into something more. It, also, brought about many different opportunities and opened many doors. However, it, also, ended and each member went their separate ways. At 21, I began singing professionally, as well as, continuing the journey of personal ministry. Through each transition, I learned different strengths and weaknesses about myself that molded me into the woman I am today. I learned to finally see what God had created me to do and be. At the age of 23, I’m finally able to see the worth in what I’ve been blessed with and how much value it holds to God, myself, and others. I have that comparison and jealousy are deadly and that no amount of money can take the place of favor and allowing the divine authority to always be in control. Every opportunity isn’t MY opportunity. Every stage isn’t meant for me to tread upon. There’s a plan already set in place, and that’s the one intend to follow.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why? And what do you hope others will take away from your work?
At this moment, I am a worship leader, founder of a community organization called “A Well To,” and an aspiring artist. Currently, I don’t have any tangible material, but I commit to making every opportunity that I am blessed to minister and be God’s voice in the earth a true experience with him. Every moment that I am privileged to lead others in corporate worship, I remove me and allow God to take complete control. The greatest message I pray people take away my ministry/artistry is Freedom. I pray people see that there’s no one way to worship and get God’s attention. I pray that people see their uniqueness in their gifts and destinies. I pray that people see that God loves them unconditionally and wholeheartedly. I want what I offer to God and his people to be authentic and true to the me he created and uniquely designed.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
I believe the biggest challenge is being secure in our own identities. We live in a generation where we allow people to define our personal narratives of ourselves because we want to be accepted. We allow people to make us feel like who we are is abnormal just because they can’t understand the totality of who we are. We are quick to adjust are creativity and hide our unique abilities to make others feel comfortable. We compare ourselves to false realities and ignorant opinions.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Currently, I am working on rebranding and creating new outlets to share my art. However, I can be found on social media outlets such as Facebook (Jazzy Robinson Walton) and Instagram (iamjasminwalton).
