Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Gordon.
Michael, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
From a very young age, I wanted to create comics. My life took a series of twists and turns, and I had nearly forgotten that dream until I saw a presentation on How to Create Your Own Comic Books by the folks at Terminus Media, a group based out of Atlanta. I now have a small independent company that publishes a series called Tiki Zombie (currently working on our fourth issue), along with a few other books in development.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why? And what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a writer and independent publisher of comic books. I enjoy working with artists on various projects such as Tiki Zombie, a comedic series about an undead lounge owner who finds himself involved in various adventures with his crew. It is very much inspired by the comic books and artists of the golden age, and I have a lot of fun playing around with a lot of tropes and imagery with the main artist, Peter Cutler. Our hope is to entertain and amuse readers with a unique take on some classic storytelling.
Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
In many ways, it is easier than ever to create artistic endeavors and release them to the masses. The tools for self-publishing, recording music and even filmmaking are more accessible than ever. However, the challenge as always is how to successfully distribute your projects. With corporations and other independent artists making so much content available, it can be difficult to locate your audience. I think the main thing cities and communities can do is continue to spotlight and celebrate independent artists.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
All my books are available for sale online at newlegendproductions.com and we have been fortunate to be featured in a few local shops. I also attend many local comic conventions. This year, we are crowdfunding each new project beginning with the newest issue of Tiki Zombie. It is our hope that by allowing folks to preorder the books, it will be easier to raise the funds to complete and publish them more often.
