Meet Koolie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Koolie.

Koolie, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’m from Palm Beach, Florida. An area where everybody is trying to dip from by any means necessary. I had a little encounter with the police during my High School days that messed up my background, so I joined the military in 2016. While I was training, for spare time I would write random lyrics down, and it eventually started to turn into a hobby, ya know? Later on, I started rapping what I had written out loud for people, and they would record me and tell me I should make songs when I go home. I did just that and dropped two songs. Cold in Flordia, which reflected on the loss of seventeen kids in a school shooting and Who Dat. Shortly after me and Young E.Z found each other through SoundCloud around April 2018, and we’ve been helping each other grow ever since.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why? And what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I typically can’t rap off topic, I normally tell a story or revolve my songs around a subject. But at the same time, I try to be as diverse as possible. So to do that I try to incorporate different styles of rap that has a set theme/mood for whatever it is you’re feeling. Like so far I go some drill, some sweet, sad and screaming stuff, a meme rap, etc. I really enjoy cartoon beats so people can expect a project called “Tooned Up” somewhere down the line. I wanted to blow up off cartoon beats, thinking it’s different and no one else did that, but then I discovered who Ski Mask The Slump God was while searching for cartoon beats. He ended up influencing my creativity along with X.

What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
Don’t be scared to do you. I thought everyone was going to judge me when I introduced my first screaming track and meme rap. I was literally rapping about anime, like who does that? But my engineer actually liked what I created saying it was different. After a while, I got comfortable making dumb/weird sounds for adlibs, songs, etc. Also, try to get in the mood of whatever you are doing. For example, if you’re about to record a hype song, but you feel shy, low or whatever. Try yelling out loud to get air in your lungs or do some push-ups to get your blood pumping.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I post snippets of unreleased songs on the gram. That’s where you’ll find everything I’m working on. Songs that I can’t get on iTunes/Spotify etc. will be on my SoundCloud. If you want to support me follow me on the gram @koolie_mar. I appreciate all the feedback I get, good or bad, it helps me grow.
