Today we’d like to introduce you to Marli Crowe.
Marli, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started Crowe Career Services in June 2018 for two reasons. The first was due to personal experience. I really struggled in my first job out of college. I had a bad manager that made my day-to-day miserable. I was proof that people don’t quit jobs, they quit managers. I spent 8-10 months applying for jobs and I realized I wasn’t getting calls back because my resume wasn’t up to par. Once I changed my resume, I landed a new position. My second reason was that when I started at my new company, we were hiring. I encouraged people I knew to apply. When they sent me their resumes, they needed a lot of work. I told a lot of people, “I can’t forward this to HR, but I can help fix your resume,” and that’s how I got started. I was doing resumes and cover letters for free and then I thought, “Hey I can get paid for this.”
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been smooth. With any new business, you learn as you go. I’ve had to make improvements to my brand, website, and processes to provide a better experience for myself and my clients. One challenge I’ve had to face is knowing how much to value the work I do. I started doing career services for free, and I was afraid to charge too much. I had to evaluate how much time and effort I’m putting into each service and price for that. I also had to realize, if people really care about making an investment in themselves, they will pay for it.
Crowe Career Services (CCS) – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Crowe Career Services (CCS) is a career enhancement business. I specialize in resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn, interview prep and career coaching. I am most proud of the people I’ve helped. The best feeling is when my clients text or call me telling me they got an interview or a new position. As someone who works in Corporate America, I see a lot of millennials and POC missing out on great opportunities because their materials are not up to par. If I can get them past the computer and in front of a hiring manager, I’ve done my job. What sets CCS apart from other career services business in the personalized experience. I don’t just put your resume into a better template, I really take the time to customize it for the career you want to go into.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
There is a quote I like that says “Success isn’t just about what you accomplish in your life; it’s about what you inspire others to do.” For Crowe Career Services, success is inspiring others to be their best selves professionally. I want people to walk away and realize they deserve a seat at the table and they deserve to be happy in their career.
