Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimbercy Marie.
Kimbercy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story began in a small town outside of Los Angeles, CA. I’ve always had a passion for writing, poetry, song lyrics, and short stories. I grew up watching movies and became fascinated by watching the film credits after every movie. I was intrigued by the people behind the scenes, those who wrote and directed them. I wanted to one day write screenplays so I could see my vision on the “Big Screen”. I took my writing serious when I wrote my first script titled “LEAST SUSPECT” ten years ago. After hearing from friends and family on how well it was written I continued. I knew at that point I had found my true PATH in life. My passion for writing brought me to Atlanta “The Hollywood of The South”. I moved to Atlanta the Summer of 2014 without knowing anyone. Once I arrived I began searching for a local director that could bring my project to fruition. Three years later I met Bobby Huntley, a young talented director who assembled an amazing crew and together we brought my vision to life.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being an independent screenwriter, I had to come up with the money on my own to film my projects. I literally had to liquidate my assets to pay for a crew, an assistant director, casting director, director, makeup artist and a caterer. The second day of shooting five members of my cast had their cars booted! The budget had skyrocketed beyond what I had anticipated. Locations for auditions and table readings weren’t factored into the budget either. Several of the scenes were shot “Guerilla Style” because the permits to shoot in the city were too costly.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Smoking Silhouettes Entertainment – what should we know?
I created “Smoking Silhouettes Entertainment” to help other independent creatives showcase and develop their projects. After completing “Least Suspect” I felt like I could accomplish anything! My hard work had finally paid off. Last year my trailer was shown at “Mann’s Chinese Theatre” in Hollywood…the same theater I visited as a little girl. My goal is to become the next Ava DuVernay or Shonda Rhimes. Since completing “Least Suspect” I’ve written a sitcom titled “Pleasant Peaks Resort” and I’m currently working on my memoir titled “Searching for Missing Pieces”. I want to help others bring their stories to fruition as well.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I’ve always challenged myself. I’ve skydived, traveled to different countries and moved to Georgia. I honestly feel that the other side of FEAR is FREEDOM. I would tell other creatives to not listen to those that say you can’t do something…whatever that something is. Just know, you will lose people along the way due to them not understanding your vision and that’s okay…it’s not for them to understand your Journey in Life. Walk in your own truth! You don’t want to be on your deathbed saying “I should have went for it”.
