Today we’d like to introduce you to LaKisha James.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. I’ve always knew I would be an entrepreneur. I would often think of the type of business I would start because God gave me many talents. I’ve always had an eye for design. I like the concepts of design, planning, and organizing. I decided to go and obtain an Interior Design degree. While at school, I was chosen for an internship at a prestigious interior design firm Kennesaw, GA.
After I graduated, I was hired as an Assistant Interior Designer. While there, I learned a lot from some top designers and learned some new things that would create a path for pursuing my destiny. I left the design firm and pursued my own business starting Designer Events by LaKisha. I also have a Management degree specializing in Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
Back in 2011, as a wedding gift to my brother and his bride, I planned their wedding reception. I had never thought about event planning before. The reception was a huge hit. Since then, I have had the pleasure of creating unforgettable events. With designing spaces and planning events, I have enjoyed meeting new people and experiencing new things. “Every space is unique, and you make it your own”.
Has it been a smooth road? Like any other business, there are ups and downs. When I first started my business, I had thoughts of failure. But I always remembered, every business started as a start-up business. That was enough to motivate me. If they can do it, I can do it. I also know God gave me everything I needed to be successful. It can get hard with many businesses in the same industry as mines. Questions I would ask myself; how do I market myself? What do I have other businesses like mines don’t? I am a new business owner, who is going to give me that one chance to make a difference in their life? The questions are endless. As a business owner, I know what sets me apart from my competitors.
Support is another challenge in business. Family and friends, you think will support you, but they don’t. You must search deep within and know that the path you decided to go down will benefit you in the long run. Staying true to yourself and being present in every situation will take you far. Failure is not an option for me.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Designer Events by LaKisha story. Tell us more about the business. Designer Events by LaKisha is an event planning and interior design business for homes and offices. I plan events and design projects from concept to complete implementation. I plan social events and corporate events. I do design consultations, kitchen and bathroom remodels, residential and commercial staging, residential and commercial design and décor. Both event planning and interior design deal with space planning, designing concepts and choosing colors to create a stylish scheme. I dedicate myself to creating an event that tells a story with the unique ability to completely transform a space. I believe in creating beautiful, comfortable spaces that my clients will love. With my passion for event planning and interior design, I’m able to meet new people and share my knowledge and experience.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade? The event planning and interior design business is always changing. Most people reach out to us for our expertise. We get our clients because our clients don’t have time to plan an event or just don’t know where to start. As for interior design clients, they look for ways to make their offices and homes different. They want their space to feel a certain way when someone walks in. Trends are always changing in my industry. That is one thing I love about my industry.
