Today we’d like to introduce you to Phylicia Jean-Louis.
Phylicia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember. Between dance competitions, recitals, all-star cheerleading, and pageantry, there has always been a need for me to grow within my artistry. My Mother taught me everything I know about being a woman, from how to apply makeup, self-love, and being a confident black woman. Although makeup artistry has evolved tremendously over the years, I’ve always had the basic skills of creating beauty makeup. My passion for makeup artistry truly began in college while working part-time at Sephora. The very first day working as a Beauty Consultant for Sephora, I knew that my career would be in the Beauty Industry. I spent my first four years as a Professional Makeup Artist, learning about various brands and their products as well as having the experience to work with every type of client and their makeup/skincare needs. Sephora molded to be the professional, detailed, well-rounded artist that I am today. After college, I moved to New York City where I began my journey as a MAC Artist.
Being a former MAC Artist has been one of the most rewarding moments for my career. Not only did I have the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the most skilled and talented artists that I have come across in the Beauty Industry, but I also had the privilege to meet some of the most amazing clients who are still apart of my clientele today. While being an artist in NYC, I had the pleasure to work with some of the best photographers and designers with an extended list of models, bloggers, broadcasters, journalist, in addition to the COE of Victoria Secret, on set for Empire’s Premier Screening, Rainy Chatter from Disney Channel’s Austin and Ally, as well as assisted VH1’s Lead Glam Coordinator, Mila Thomas with legendary music group Envoge for Good Morning America. Fast forward to today, having relocated my artistry to Atlanta, Georgia where I continue to grow my business and clientele while expanding my brand “PhyBeauty Artistry” globally. I have created a brand that I am most proud of and looking forward to the continued blessings that the future holds for me. Working as a Professional Makeup Artist has been a dream!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing in life is a smooth road. There will always be struggles, trials, and tribulations. The key to getting through those hard times is remaining confident, positive, and to always remember why you started. When I first began promoting my artistry, I had lots of doubts. I worried if social media would approve of my work, would clients want to book me and tons of other unnecessary thoughts. While working at MAC and becoming friends with other artists, I learned to understand the importance of being confident in your work. If you are proud of something you’ve created, celebrate it! The only person that can hold you back from growing is you. Take chances, educate yourself, PRACTICE, promote your passions, and be confident in you!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
With almost 10+ years of experience working in the Beauty Industry, over the years, I have worked as a Beauty Educator with thousands of women across the globe to help create their beauty rituals and what makes them feel beautiful. PhyBeauty Artistry’s 1 on 1 and Group Makeup Classes are one of the biggest components in my brand. PhyBeauty Artistry Makeup Lessons are an educational course. Makeup Lessons provide celebrity makeup techniques, product knowledge, skin tone match, latest makeup trends and more. Students will not only learn how to achieve flawless makeup on themselves or their clients, but my students will learn how to celebrate their beauty through self-love and have a clear understanding on what makes them feel beautiful from inside out. I’ve always dreamed of creating a brand that represents beauty for all women. PhyBeauty Artistry is about being the best version of you, a brand inspired by you.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Always be grateful and thankful and NEVER give up on your dreams! Nothing great in life comes easy. You have to work hard for it. The plans will change, life will get rough, and many times you will doubt yourself, but God gave you those wild dreams for a reason and if you can dream them, you can achieve them! When you least expect it, you will wake up one day and realize, you are living the life you’ve dreamed. Enjoy the journey!
