Life and Work with Sophia Reed

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Reed.

Sophia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started Sophie-sticated Mom because when I became a single mom, I went through so much struggle and financial hardship. I had a couple of degrees but was still struggling. I remember thinking that if I had a college education and I was still struggling on so many levels, how many other women and single moms are out there struggling as well. But then, I hit my breaking point.

I remember one day, I just looked in the mirror and I realized I looked like a hot mess ran over twice with a train… the train then backed up and hit me again and once that was over, a bus came in and hit me afterward. I was feeling depressed. The person that I once was, was gone and replaced with someone with bad skin, matted hair, and bad clothes. I was tired of looking low budget and being depressed. I remember thinking “Will I ever have the life I want, the man I want, or will things ever change?” After wallowing in self-pity and playing a victim in my own life, I decided to get up, get out, and get something. I decided to go after and do the things that made me happy and I have not looked back since. Now, through my blog, I teach people to PRAY over their lives and SLAY over their lives. I feel that each woman should have the exact life they deserve.

I have a degree in counseling, a Ph.D., and I am a National Certified Counselor. And because of what I went through, I teach women to slay in the most affordable way possible. I help women in fashion, hair, beauty, job advice, relationship advice, and even faith.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
A few years ago, I actually lost my really good paying job and it took me a while to get another job and even when I did, it did not pay as much as the job I lost. At the time, I was a homeowner and a single mom. I struggled so much to pay bills and even to buy food or gas. But in the end, it was the same struggle that made me stronger and the same struggles that shaped my purpose. I learn to shop at the thrift store, do my own makeup, and my hair because I could not afford to go a professional or even shop at the regular store. I begin to get so many compliments on my outfits, my hair, and makeup that people did not even know I got it from the thrift store on at a discount. That is when I realized that, so women were in my situation. Not able to afford to look their best, not able to afford to get a nice suit to go to a job interview, or get a dress to go to an event and that is when I decided to teach the same things I had learned myself through my blog. My advice is that even when you are going through something and it sucks, there may be a reason for it. Don’t let it defeat you, but let it make you stronger.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Sophie-sticated Mom – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
What I am proud about is that as my blog has grown, I remain true to my brand. So many beauty or even fashion bloggers will showcase makeup brands that cost hundreds or clothes that cost thousands of dollars. Even though nothing is wrong with that, I still stay true to myself and what I teach. Now, I am in a better situation financially, but I will still go to the thrift store and shop for affordable brands. I really want to teach women that they can use what they have to upgrade their life, their look, their job, their relationships, and even the type of men they date. And they do not have to have everything or to be everything in order to do that.
