Today we’d like to introduce you to Mimi Kuang.
Mimi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been doing professional makeup for ten years. It makes me so happy when I can help people look beautiful and feel their best. This is especially true on a day that is so important in their lives, such as a wedding. I love to see my brides walk down the aisle with confidence, grace and beauty.
I’ve always had a passion for fashion and beauty from an early age. I went on to study Fashion Marketing at the Art Institute of Atlanta. Additionally, in 2009, I took a series of intense bridal makeup and hair courses. I was lucky to find an opportunity to work directly with a wedding studio in Atlanta. Since then, I’ve done hundreds of styling sessions for friends, family, bridesmaids, brides, and models. These experiences made it clear that bridal makeup and hair was my calling.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have a full-time job in addition to my bridal business. It is hard to keep the work/life balance sometimes, especially when most weddings are on the weekend. Time management is critical. However, I love weddings so much that I always make it work!!
Communication is the key to doing makeup. Everyone has their own view of beauty. It is important to understand the client’s preference, sometimes this can be challenging. So, I highly recommend a trial before the event. A trial allows me to better understand my customers perspective and give them a preview of what their looks will be on the big day.
Doing makeup on each unique client can be challenging because everyone has different features, skin tones, facial structures, eye shapes, etc. As I have gained experience with a diverse set of customers, I’ve learned different techniques to bring out their best. Continuous education is important to me so I take classes to keep up with the latest trends.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
As an artist, I specialize in bridal makeup and hairstyling. I’m very proud that my brides give me complete trust! My client’s tell me that I have great communication and interpersonal skills. I love working with different cultures. I have done multicultural weddings, including American, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Nepali and Indian, etc. I am known for enhancing my client’s beauty based on their unique features. Mimi’s bride glows~
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
Personally, I think female leadership in my industry is going strong!! All artists are great in their own way no matter what gender they choose to be presented for: male, female, transgender or homosexual. Everyone is thriving to create their best in the makeup artistry. I’m very happy to be part of this movement where we share arts with no boundaries.
