Today we’d like to introduce you to Rich Brown.
Rich, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all started when I was watching youtube. I was watching a short documentary of a potter who was creating commissioned work for a local coffee shop and when I saw him turn that mound of clay into a mug, I was hooked. I then decided to seek out a local pottery studio where I could take lessons. My searching led me to Mudfire in Decatur, and once I started my journey with clay, it was something that I know I would be doing for the rest of my life. I would take a fifty-minute drive from Peachtree to Decatur at least three times a week to work on my craft. There was something about working with clay that held my interest and I continually strived to push myself as a ceramic artist. After three years of working out of Mudfire, I decided to invest in my own wheel and kiln and from that moment on I would work with clay everyday.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a very smooth road because I am currently doing something that I love. Everyday is filled with challenges and obstacles; however, they are challenges that I embrace.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Pottery32 – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My business name is Pottery32 because I started my journey with clay when it was 32 years old. I am currently a full-time potter that specializes in functional pottery (pottery that will be used in your daily routine, cups, bowls, and plates). The thing that I am most proud of as a company is bringing joy to those who use or gift my ware. I hear it all the time “I use your mug every morning” and former clients will seek me out to order gifts of my pottery for their loved ones. What sets me apart from others is the desire to please the user of my creations. It’s more about the people than the pottery.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My future plans for the company is that I will be launching a retail shop in Hogansville, Georgia. The store will be opening in May of 2019 in the Depot on Main Street. I will be selling my pottery as well as other handmade goods from many of my craftsman and artist friends. Look out for Brick and Hubbard in Hogansville, GA.
