Today we’d like to introduce you to Jumoke Adedoyin.
Jumoke, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and spent my childhood in Lagos, Nigeria. I am one of seven children- the first daughter and I have two older brothers, who are both doctors, so I guess you could say that the desire to care for others is a family trait. I moved to Georgia, where I attended Clark Atlanta University and then Howard University College of Dentistry, where I graduated number one in my class in 2001. I am married to my husband, Charles; we have three boys; Jimi, 17; Femi, 14; and Seun, 10.
I am definitely a home-buddy; I love being home with my family, taking vacations and I do love watching soccer. My husband and sons all play soccer and are self-confessed soccer fanatics, so I have earned my badge as a soccer mom-wife ~ go Atlanta United and Arsenal!.
I maintain a dental practice in the North Metro Atlanta area, which is focused primarily on Dental Implants and Dental Prosthodontics. I am also a faculty at Implant Pathway, a continuing education continuum for general dentists, which focuses on the surgical placement of dental implants.
Over the last couple of years, I have embarked on a journey of being a voice and an advocate within the dental implant community to educate, equip and empower female dentists on how to build and sustain a thriving implant practice while empowering these women across the board on what it means to step into their Next Level Living.
I believe that in order to maintain a life balance, one has to make each moment count, live life boldly, love people and never let someone outside of yourself dictate what you are capable of.
By far, the grounding force in my life has been my faith and the belief that regardless of what I face, with God and hard work I can do and be anything.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course, there is no growth story without challenges along the way. As a woman of color in a male-dominated industry, the struggle to be seen, heard and acknowledged is very daunting. However, this has served as a blessing, because it has made me bolder and increased my hunger for success. I say to every young woman out there, who is determined to be a success story, always know that you are stronger than your circumstance. This message is more relevant today to young women who are just starting their life’s journey.
I have definitely seen my fair share of life and the uncertainties it brings. I remember how goals for my post-graduate education got threatened by lack of funding, even though my parents were a 100% committed to me getting a stellar education, they were not able to financially support me at that moment. I had to dig my heels in and source for scholarships with the tenacity of a bulldog. I realized, at that moment, that life will throw curveballs but backing down is never the answer. I ended up getting a full scholarship for my undergraduate studies and dental school finishing with zero student loans – isn’t God good?
From the challenges of not knowing how my education will be funded to obtaining my citizenship, opening my dental office and living life on my own terms, there has been a common thread; if I wanted more out of life, I had to go get it myself.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Dr. Jumoke story. Tell us more about it.
I am a small business owner and a dentist I guess you can call me a dentiprenuer. My dental practice is focused on implant dentistry and we provide dental care to patients who require full mouth rehabilitation that may include removal of the remaining teeth and dental implants to restore function. Dental implants afford me the opportunity to help these patients get a fresh start. We sometimes take our smiles for granted and I do believe that having a good smile increases your self-confidence and access to opportunities. My job every day is to recreate what was lost and help instill self-confidence and self-worth to my patients. I am so blessed to be a part of several thousand stories of new beginnings. Apart from my career as a dentist, I have a platform that is focused on empowering women in dentistry and beyond. Over the last few years, I observed that in most management meetings and as a member of dental implant faculty that I tend to be the only female and I started to ask myself ‘Why?”
I am privileged to have met so many ambitious and smart women, so I have taken up the mission to support women in fields that are primarily male dominated by mentoring them to be who God has called them as marketplace leaders in their respective domains.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking, in general? What has worked well for you?
ASK – Look for someone that has been successful and ask. There are so many successful people that want to help other people succeed. Don’t ever assume that a person is too busy to help you navigate the path of success. Remember that having a mentor is very important in achieving your goals as fast as possible
without making as many mistakes.
