Meet Brittney Miller of Sugar-Rush Cakery in Covington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Miller.

Brittney, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in the kitchen watching my family cook or bake, but I grew my love for pastry when I was 16 years old. I watched alot of shows on food network and it made me more curious as to how creative I really was; I could draw, so I wondered how I could execute my art on a cake. I took my first shot with a spongebob cake at 18 years old for my sister’s 13th birthday and it came out pretty good. I was very pleased especially with it being my first try. After that particular moment, a couple of people had seen my work and started asking for spongebob cakes left and right. I went from baking one spongebob cake a month to baking six a month. So, I decided to try my luck with other character cakes and I kept hitting the jackpot with clients and next thing you know, business started booming! I attended Le Cordon Bleu in 2010 and graduated with my Associate’s in Patisserie and Baking. I officially opened my business in 2013 after a friend of mine encouraged me to start an Instagram page. I was terrified, but after pushing myself off the ledge, I’ve experienced so many blessings in my business and now here I am six years strong and getting better everyday. I’m happy I took a leap of faith despite my fear of failure.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Having a business is literally like being on a rollercoaster. My bakery isn’t any different from other businesses. For a moment we’re booming and then next thing you know, we’re slow. I also understand we can’t please everyone. No matter how hard you work, there’s always going to be someone that just isn’t pleased. You can give them everything they ask for, but they’re still not happy. I’ve learned that you can only do so much, but as long as you keep it professional and you take the proper steps to make things right, you’ve done your part!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sugar-Rush Cakery story. Tell us more about the business.
I am what I like to call, “An all-around chef”, but I specialize in pastry. I’m known for my wedding cakes, specialty cakes, my private dinners, and my private lessons. I’m known as the mom of the kitchen and also as the clown. I love to laugh, so I’ll crack jokes all day in the kitchen just to lighten the stress of the kitchen. They call me the mom of the kitchen because I’m a natural born nurturer. If someone gets hurt, I’m dropping everything and running to the first aid kit. I clean them up and dress their wounds properly. I just try to help as much as possible.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5 to 10 years, I see a building. Nothing too big, but I definitely see a shift in my business. I’ll have the fresh breads and sweets on display as well as a soup of the day and a catch of the day. I’m excited for what God has for me!
