Meet Montavious Jackson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Montavious Jackson.

Montavious, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I always had a third ear and taste for music. Ever since I discovered people like J-Dilla, Flying Lotus, Thundercat, Pharrell, etc… started making music when I was around the age 13-14. It was ‘11 Christmas, and my uncle bought me my first own laptop. With that, came software he already hooked-up for me because he knew I always had an interest for dealing with music in some way. And since then, the rest was pretty much history.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a weird rollercoaster for me and life in general. At first, it started off as just something I’ve never done before, so it was a nerve wrecking yet-thrilling experience for me making music. My struggles were school and work at first (It’s still work sometimes), moving away from everyone, relationships, and my mental health.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I go by my first name, Montavious, or my nickname which is ‘mohntea’ (spelled differently due to copyright reasons haha). I am a 21 music producer. I’ve been making music for about seven years but took it more serious earlier this year. What I am most proud of myself is that I can literally use any sound and put it into a beat with a story behind it. That’s what makes me, well me haha. But what sets me apart from others is that I am very very unpredictable when it comes to what to make in music. It could be something very weird and spacey, or it could be a banger that people will play in DJ Sets and shows and make people go crazy. I’m all about inventing, innovation. So anything I make or sound I happen to dissect my ears to, you’re gonna be feeling what I’ve been expressing with my music.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
In middle school, before I had a laptop l, I used to make beats off of my PlayStation on an indie game demo called ‘MTV Music Generator’’ where you make beats using pre-made loops. So since it was only a PlayStation game, I couldn’t really do much with the songs. Therefore, I’d get my audio recorder on my phone and record the beats and remade them as soon as I got my laptop. I thought that was pretty cool.
