Today we’d like to introduce you to Shatonna Nelson.
Shatonna, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I originally began in healthcare but I have always did some branding on the side. A few years ago my brother passed away and the hospital was a sad reminder. I decided to leave for just a little while and do something different. I had previously worked in the media in the news realm. So I knew how to communicate and what the industry was looking for. I had a plethora of high profile friends that I was helping on the humanitarian side. I started out helping with back to school events, and organize 501c3 events. Eventually, I was making twice as much as I was at the hospital. I begin to branch out into music, television, and fashion. And well there you have it. That’s how this happened.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve had a lot of struggles from a child to now. The most notable is losing my brother (honestly a big cousin but you’d never know) it was life-changing. Also, have small children and having to fight twice and hard being a mom and taking a chance on my business.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I have own a PR firm. We manage visibility, outreach, awareness, and public image. I specialize in brand building, damage control, and startups. People joke and call me Oliva Pope. I’m strategic. I can take a problem and solve it indefinitely. I’m known for being very low key and my willingness to help almost anyone who truly wants redemption and/or a successful brand. I’m most proud of my humanitarian work my fit does. Outside of what we specialize in we work hard to be active in the community in positive ways.
What were you like growing up?
I was a NERD. No way around it. I like books and lots of them. I enjoyed school and every subject. I had the big glasses. I always was really nice and wanted to see others happy. I literally transformed from a nerd to try out for cheer for someone who was afraid. We both made it. That was me. I knew I was weird I was okay with my identity and I was always looking to help someone else embrace who they were. I was for sure wise beyond my years.
