Meet Leigh Germy of Leigh Germy Photography in Greater Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leigh Germy.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Graduated from Liberty University in 2002, with a Communications degree, I moved to Atlanta in 2004 and worked at a Salon in Buckhead for a year and went from doing hair to doing their graphic design, then transitioned to a non-profit leadership organization doing design. During this time, I would help a photographer friend, Zack Arias on shoots doing hair, learned a lot about production and photography. I decided in 2009 to go on my first mission trip with my church and was encouraged to get a DSLR to get some better quality images. This is where it all began. When I got back, my creative community continued to speak into my new found craft of photography, saying I had “a great eye”. From this point I started taking pictures of everything, test shooting, engagement sessions for friends and even a couple small weddings. Fast forward to now, I was involved in some photo workshops, reached out to and picked the brains of some other photographers I look up to (i.e.: Tanja Lippert, Daley Hake and Zack Arias) I got a lot of advice and now I have learned by experience my niche. I have also built a strong family of insanely talented people that continue to stretch and challenge me in my craft. With my design background I learned that I like to create a picture, set it up, and construct it. My passion is portraits of women and the outdoors. If I am able to do both, is the best of both worlds. I want my photos to tell a story to capture a glimpse of one’s spirit if I can. My dream would be to be able to work alongside or with the greats in the national geographic and outdoor industry world i.e.; Red Bull, Patagonia, Jimmy Chin, Chris Burkard to name a few.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Its art, so as the old saying goes, I have been a “struggling artist” since the beginning. I won’t lie, when I was shooting weddings, I was able to work solely on my photography, but it wasn’t what I was passionate about, not what I was made to do. In the art world, we all wait for our “big break.” For me, that would be just another road to go down to meet and possibly influence new people. I currently work for a local brewery as a rep and it has given me the freedom and flexibility to do shoots and also have had the opportunity to create custom marketing images for the brand. So having 2 jobs may sound like a struggle, but when I look back, it’s been a journey. A road that has made some different stops and detours but it has allowed me to do what I love and also have had new opportunities in the process. In life you have to “trust the process” in everything and never get comfortable, because things will always change, and they might not be what you are expecting. I am thankful for the community I have had and the advice in that process I have received, to keep going.

Leigh Germy Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I do photography. Lifestyle. Headshots. Travel. I don’t work from a studio and I don’t do the package style of deliverables, I prefer to do shoots where the goal is not to get as many images as possible but to get the final desired product. It makes the process a lot more enjoyable. I love people and I desire to make each one of my photos I take to tell a story and bring life.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Silly, but I have a client that I work consistently with and I was on the highway one day and say one of my images on a billboard, it was nothing huge, but made me feel proud of myself.
