Conversations with the Inspiring Telica Conyers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Telica Conyers.

Telica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my journey as an entrepreneur right here in Norcross, GA at the age of 11. My sister & I were visiting our dad for the summer from Florida. Our first night in town, we went to Winn Dixie for groceries & I saw a “Hype Hair” magazine in the checkout line. I asked my dad if he would buy it for me & he did. I spent the next few weeks studying various hairstyles and after returning home to Florida from our visit, I locked myself in my room & began cutting my hair and adding tracks of hair I had “borrowed” from my mother’s hair stash. After a few hours had passed, I emerged from my bedroom with my version of a Stacked bob hairstyle that I was inspired by from the “Hype Hair” magazine. I initially thought my mom was going to be upset with me but to my surprise, she was very impressed and encouraged me to continue to practice and allowed me to practice hairstyles on her from time to time. It wasn’t until high school that I started doing hair for some of my friends and relatives and from that point on, doing hair is just what I did. It took me a while to obtain my license in cosmetology because as a young single mother, I felt like I needed to have a “real job” with a steady income to provide for myself & my child.

It was 2011 when I finally obtained my cosmetology license and began my journey to entrepreneurship. Since then, I have worked in salons in Louisiana as well as Atlanta, even remodeling a hair salon in the back of barbershop & managing that salon for a short period of time. Over time, I have transitioned into serving my clients as a custom wig maker & instructor, I currently offer 1 on 1 custom wig making courses, where I teach beginner/intermediate wig enthusiast “The Foundations of Wig Making”. I am also Co-Founder of “The Lioness Group” an IT Consulting Firm which specializes in helping a small business operate more like corporations through technology. Additionally, The Lioness Group will be partnering with The Microsoft Corporation to provide STEM/STEAM related workshops referred to as “Cubs Code Too” to kids in underserved & distressed communities.

Has it been a smooth road?
I have encountered many obstacles along the way & honestly, I still am. A lot of the challenges I faced were internal meaning I harbored a lot of self-doubts. I made a lot of excuses from being a single mom to being a stay at home, constantly placing limits on my ability to grow in business. I really had to take some time to disconnect and reflect. I felt like I didn’t have clarity in my purpose and as I was getting older, the pressure of figuring it out was weighing heavy on me. My advice for other women who may just be starting out is to connect with other women & people that are like-minded, whom you can learn and grow with, build a solid network of people that can inspire you, who will encourage & support you on your journey. Most times, it’s YOU that may be keeping YOU from winning. Believe in yourself & never stop learning and growing. Remembering your WHY will also help you during those times of uncertainty. My husband & all three of my children are my WHY & reminding myself of this helps keep me grounded.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
I find inspiration from many sources, I am inspired by a women who are not afraid to go after what they want. Women who do everyday things like managing their home & family life like a BOSS. As well as women who actually are bosses and are really out here making BIG things happen. But If I have to be specific, I would have to say that my mom was the first woman to inspire me. She was the first woman I saw as a small business owner. She definitely planted the seed that is currently growing within me.
