Today we’d like to introduce you to Karma Fouch and Sharena Johnson.
Karma and Sharena, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We have been friends since 2012 when I served as a Nurse Manager for a local emergency department, holding a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Sharena was an EMT in the emergency department and had recently left the DeKalb County Fire Department as a firefighter.
Despite our positions within the ER, we became fast friends as we recognized our crazy similarities in humor, straight-no-chaser personalities, and values for family and relationships. Sharena has always had a flair for hair and in Fall 2017, decided to enroll in a Master Cosmetology program and, not to be left in the dust, I decided to begin researching an industry that would allow creativity and maintains respect for science and protocol.
In this, I discovered the wonderful world of esthiology, or esthetics. We sacrificed normalcy, as most working adults do, to maintain balance between working full time, school schedules, and family. The value of skincare was recognized as Sharena explored topics in the Master Cosmetology program and found her passion there. This is where the roots of SKINWORKS Day Spa were founded.
Having not even graduated yet, we stepped out on faith and secured a beautiful space in the heart of Covington, GA. We truly claimed our position in the skincare industry having 22 years of combined medical experience and an intent to provide quality, innovative services.
My (Karma) background in management has allowed me to be able to coach individuals in resume preparation and interview skills, creating space for community-based experiences that allow for a well-rounded service. We are opening may of 2019 and offer a full range of spa services including dermaplaning, chemical peels, body contouring, and lash extensions.
We also offer Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support for certifications for medical professionals and beauty industry trainings for beauty professionals. Our hope is to serve our growing community and maintain high quality, affordable prices that all economic levels can appreciate.
Has it been a smooth road?
HA! We started this journey of business ownership without having even graduated so there were obviously NO licenses and although we own an online business, RedKarma BODY, we had no idea where to start in opening a brick and mortar location.
Sharena actually became pregnant with twins in August 2018 and they were born April 2019, so our resources became a bit strained. This was anticipated and planned for though, as we had sat together months prior and tried to preplan all the kinks that we knew would present.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with SKINWORKS Day Spa – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
SKINWORKS Day Spa is a full-service spa located in the heart of Covington, GA. Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and the least?
Covington is (now) quickly growing. The lifestyle experiences that we’d usually seek inside the perimeter are becoming increasingly more available.
What we like least is the fact that in many cases, we still have to commute to have trendy experiences
