Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyric TheArtist
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lyric. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Ever since I could remember, I’ve always been into art. My grandmother is an artist & as a child, I’d watch her make things from calligraphy & paintings all the way to fully decorated wedding dresses & cakes. I’d always be drawing with or without my grandma, I was the “draw on my school work & hand it in” kid. In middle school I had some shoes I drew on with a sharpie & I thought it was cool. I drew letters, cartoons, & stuff that I liked. I drew some pen letters on myself & one of my teachers showed me a tattoo magazine & I started drawing what I saw in the magazine. It made me want to become a tattoo artist. After high school, I went to college, I worked jobs, & even thought about the military. I felt none of that was for me & I wouldn’t be happy with life doing any of that. I tried to get a tattoo apprenticeship & every place had told me no. I ended up getting a job airbrushing shirts. It didn’t last long at all, but I did learn to air brush. During that time, I found my way into making music. My older brother made music & he let me feature on a song & I thought it was fun. I got tired of being told no & didn’t feel like waiting for my brother to make my own music. So, I quit asking, saved my money, started buying my own stuff. I practiced, & did my homework, & started doing my own thing. Time went by & I felt like I was in the same place & in my personal life nothing good was happening. I tried going back to college & I did learn but I still felt it wasn’t for me. I had a chance to move back to Georgia, so I permanently moved back in 2012 from Waterbury Connecticut. Since then, I’ve worked hard at & stayed focused on becoming a better artist. I’ve worked at different tattoo shops around Atlanta & Gwinnett Co. & learned a lot from each experience. I made music on my own & used to perform a lot. I was in a music group for a little bit this one time [that was even fun while it lasted]. In 2016, I started working at City Of Ink on Edgewood Ave. where I currently tattoo. In 2017, on my own, I released a 5 track EP “Sleeves In The Summer 2” & I plan on releasing & doing more with music. In 2018, I started customizing sneakers & haven’t yet decided if I want to get into it like I’ve seen others, so I’ll keep it going & see what happens. But no matter what I do, I do it to the best of my ability, my way, & I have fun doing it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think there’s ever a smooth road in anything anyone chooses to do. But for me, the biggest obstacle was always second guessing & doubting myself. Once I kicked that it was on.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a tattoo artist. I mainly like to do custom lettering, Mandala, Polynesian tribal, floral, & cartoon characters. I try to do a little of everything but most people like my mandala’s & my lettering. Aside from tattooing I’ve been getting more into customizing & restoring sneakers & making them completely wearable & durable. What I’m proud of most is my work ethic & my ability to get things done no matter how much “pressure” I’m under. What sets me apart from others is my attention to detail, & that I show & prove.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck… I don’t believe too much in “luck.” I believe that everything has its reason for happening, it’s really how I could take things that happen & use them to my advantage.
