Today we’d like to introduce you to Crysta Marshall.
Crysta, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Defined with Purpose was founded in 2010 on the principle of instilling self-worth, value, and purpose into the lives of young men and women. Unfortunately, my daughter was a victim of sexual abuse when she was younger, which began a long and challenging road of dealing with the legal, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the situation. As time passed and DWP developed, we began to notice a correlation between sexual abuse and a lack of self-worth in our clients, and this led to the organization developing programs to aid men, women, boys, and girls, who are victims of sexual abuse.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This has certainly not been a smooth ride. Building an organization from the ground up is never an easy feat, and the strenuous process that many of our clients go through continues to be a learning experience that helps us assist and support our clients, as we have experienced it first-hand. Trying to build a non-profit organization while also fighting through the personal challenges and legal case with my daughter and still trying to help others through their own pain has been very challenging but it is unbelievably worth it to see our clients grow and flourish.
What else should our readers know?
Our workshops are the heart and soul of our organization. The workshops provide clients with a fun, relaxed and open environment that creates a space where they can confront and work through personal issues with the help of our amazing mentors. Each workshop is centered around a lesson that helps our clients grow closer to the understanding of their self-worth, value, and purpose. Our goal is to create an intimate environment where we work through tough topics, then apply the lessons learned on a personal level to the specific situation of each person through group discussion. Beyond our workshops, we offer to counsel to those in need with our licensed professional counselor and legal support to families in need. We have various workshops to try to fit the needs of our clients. Our “WANT2BME” workshop is for children ages 10-14 that aims to promote a healthy sense of self-worth and purpose. Our “MADE4MORE” workshop is for adolescents ages 15-18, which also focuses on self-worth and purpose, as well as aspects such as emotional intelligence and creating and maintaining positive relationships. Our “#nomoresecrets” workshops is for ages 5-24 and it is a continuation of the self-worth workshops specifically tailored to individuals who are victims of child molestation and sexual abuse, this program is combined with therapy sessions from our licensed therapists. On top of that, we also offer workshops for parents, which provide a support group to the loved ones of those who are victims of sexual abuse, and helps them to further understand the healing process, as well as navigating the legal process. Based on the individual need of the client, DWP assists with therapy and legal fees. We are very proud to say that we have helped hundreds of families and the number is steadily growing.
What were you like growing up?
I was an athlete growing up, I ran track all throughout my childhood and even went on to run in college. I have a relatively laid-back personality, making it easy for me to make friends everywhere I go. I am and have always been, adventurous, love trying new things and am always eager to just be of help to people, in any way possible.
