Quianna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Discipline Us Dance Company is a faith-based company that I started in 2013 with a heart to provide a cleaner dance alternative for our youth. Far too often, I watched kids get trained with dance techniques too mature for their age. From my experience as a dancer, I knew that dance was a powerful means of creative expression and wanted to make a difference in the lives of our youth, hence I teamed up with Music on Wheels Performing Arts Academy. I designed this program to mentor and train the students in a way that not only teaches them the fundamentals of dance but also instills values that will strengthen them as young adults. I started teaching kids how to use their bodies, through dance, to give God Glory and send an uplifting message that would bring healing, joy, and breakthrough to people’s lives.
It has been a very rewarding journey as I get the privilege of witnessing children come into the program with fear to leave bold, depressed but have their joy restored, and mischievous children become disciplined. Now, six years in existence, our dance program is offered in several schools all around Georgia.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning a small business comes with many obstacles. It’s definitely not a smooth ride but every challenge brings opportunity for growth. During slow business periods, you learn to persevere and be resourceful. When misunderstandings arise, you learn to deal with conflict and communicate with more clarity. These are some of the struggles of business ownership but again, these instances were opportunities for me to grow; personally and business-wise.
Please tell us about Discipline Us Dance Company.
Discipline Us is a faith-based dance program that specializes in teaching Contemporary Dance and Urban Rhythms which is similar to Hip Hop. This program teaches the kids how to use the dance to give God Glory.
Our kids take a lot from the world as it pertains to the arts because there are not a lot of healthy alternatives to things that they deem are cool and fun. Discipline Us is that healthy alternative. We offer dance that is fun and exciting but still teaches them strong dance techniques that will prepare any aspiring dancer for a great future in dance. It also shows them how dance was used in the bible, which was to Praise and Worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This program provides an opportunity for them to be a light in the darkness and shows kids in our sphere of influence that you can still be cool and be saved.
The kids in this program have had opportunities to go out and minister through dance all over Georgia and have impacted the lives of many of our youth who need a healthy diet of music and entertainment that fuels the soul and doesn’t dry it up. My mission is to use the arts to build our children up to be strong Godly examples in our society, and that they grow up to be women and men that love God and love serving God.
