Meet Joe Byrne of WuTang Georgia in Athens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Byrne.

Master Byrne has been a practioner of martial arts for over 25 years and has been teaching for over 15 years. He has trained in Kempo Karate, Tang Soo Do, Jow Gar, Baji Quan, Pigua Zhang, Bagua Zhang, Praying Mantis, Xing Yi, and Tai Chi (Yang’s and Chen’s). He is also teaches Chi Gung (Qi Gong).

He has a black belt in Tang Soo Do, a black sash in Jow Gar, is a Master in Baji Quan and Pigua Zhang, has a black sash in Bagua Zhang, and Tai Chi and is an inner door disciple of Grand Master Tony Yang.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Struggles along the way are that many students don’t have the discipline and commitment to stick with martial arts. Generally speaking, two in 10 will become instructors. Others will leave for a while and come back and start over again. That makes cash flow burdensome. With the economy in a downturn, gyms and martial arts are usually the first a practitioner will give up.

WuTang Georgia – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
WuTang Georgia specializes in Baji Qua,”The body guard style”, and Pigua Zhang. Grand Master Tony Yang (featured on ESPN) is world renown. His Master Liu Yun Qiao trained Shang Hi Sheks presidential body guards in Taiwan. Great Grand Mater Liu’s Master (Spear Li) trained the Emperors body guards in China.

What sets us apart from others is that we have a world renowned lineage that teaches traditional martial arts. We are not the Americanized get your black belt in a year with no substance. We are also renowned for Bagua Zhang three generations from Yin Fu, Hence, Yin Fu Bagua Zhang (the mother pearl of martial arts).

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success begins with humility and loss of false pride. Discipline and commitment are necessary to build a foundation to build upon. Once the student has demonstrated these tenets he/she are ready to learn martial arts through (Kung Fu = skill). Skill requires hard work and putting your body, mind and spirit beyond what you think are and believe are your limitations. Everybody reaches plateaus where they feel stagnate. But with continued practice the student realizes this is a stepping stone to a higher level of martial arts skill.

I look for students who will put all their effort into training no matter their level of skill.
