Today we’d like to introduce you to K. Mia Powers.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. The Kreative Umbrella was created as an act of rebellion initially and morphed into something greater than I intended. While pursuing a doctoral degree I needed an extra job to help my husband make the ends meet. I took a job as a freelance Makeup Artist at MAC Cosmetics and it kicked my creative doors off the hinges. I’ve always been an eclectic, colorful, free spirit and loved the world of makeup. The idea of being paid to play in makeup seemed too good to be true. As I continued through graduate school, I worked at MAC; helping women to find shades of lipsticks and concealers, but I learned that my position as an artist was much more than just highlighter and lip pencils. Women were having therapy while sitting in my makeup chair. The makeup was literal face paint that masked the broken dreams, hurts, and grief women faced daily. I quickly moved up the ranks at MAC and was promoted to a full time, 24 hour artist. The promotion forced me to choose either my career in the makeup industry or my dream of becoming a psychotherapist. I instead decided to create my own lane and thus Kreative Umbrella was born.
The road has been tough in finding my own way. Many would say that Atlanta is over saturated with talented makeup artists, bloggers, and beauty industry professionals. Creating a brand while also working as a full-time psychotherapist, mothering two children, and being a whole wife has been difficult, to say the least. Finding the balance to cultivate my entrepreneurial spirit while also pursuing my dreams has been hard. I worked long hours with late nights and early mornings, but it has been worth it. My husband is a very supportive partner and he (along with others) have encouraged, challenged, and pushed me every step of the way.
Some call it luck, but I believe God has divinely designed events in my journey. Life is filled with highs and lows, but your response to life’s occurrences is how you define yourself. I have chosen to succeed in my way; on my own terms. There is always someone watching or reading your moves; good or bad. I try to aid others by encouraging them to see themselves and their lives in new and different perspectives. There’s no luck in that. Just divine intervention using me to teach others.
