Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Corner.
Dawn, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Growing up, I was always creative and had a taste for art and painting. I attended Drexel University for Design and Merchandising where I was exposed to many influential artists such as Matisse, Degas, Monet, Gauguin, and Van Gogh. I had a design, collage, and mixed media classes, but unfortunately, no formal painting classes. After graduation, I worked in retail for Ann Taylor and as a buyer for Urban Outfitters in their early days. At Drexel, I met my husband Rob. We got married in 1989 and now have four wonderful grown children. When I wasn’t driving the kids to practices, school, doctors, occupational therapies, etc., I painted just about anything I had around the house: furniture, pillows, canvases, and baby onesies.
In 2005, Rob’s job brought us to Georgia and I started taking painting classes and workshops. It made me realize how much I still wanted to learn more and further develop my painting skills. In 2012, a career change for my husband provided me the opportunity to step up my love for art and turn it into a full-time career. It was a beautiful blessing and with the kids growing and gaining independence, time and a renewed focus helped shape my art to what it is today. I paint in my home studio every day. It’s been a wonderful journey to get here, and I’ve enjoyed every second of it. I love to learn and share what I know.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My paintings are characterized as a deep layering of colors and textures finished with a glossy glaze to further draw out the intensity of colors. One of my favorite and most requested subjects is angels. Inspired by my mom, I gravitated to painting angels due to their images of courage, grace, faith, and peace, and believing angels are among us all the time. When painting angels, I start by just trusting the process, and intuitively letting my angels develop and come into being. Each one perfect, unique and special. Whether it be angels, trees, flowers, figures, landscapes or animals, my paintings are intentionally created from an abstract expressive play with colors. Constantly experimenting and changing until the layers form the final image. My hope is that my art is given with intention and love and finds a home where it can be cherished and admired for a long time.
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
Artists are part of a unique and vibrant community and we all learn from each other. Keep learning and growing and always try new things.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Along with my web site (www.artbydawncorner.com), I am very active on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Social media and the internet has been a blessing and created a wonderful way for artists like myself to display their talents and garner greater attention in a crowded world. I do commission work and also teach in my home studio.
Some of my work is available at Plum Tree Yoga in Roswell (www.plumtreeyoga.com), Heart Soul & Art in Marietta (www.heartsoulandart.com), The Art of Touch Massage in downtown Atlanta (www.theartoftouchmassage.com).
Art enthusiasts can support my work, as well as all artists, by buying our original works. It’s worth it! Attend shows, visit galleries and everywhere local artists display their talents.
