Meet Jason Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Thomas.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story is very interesting. I grew up in a single parent home. Coming up as a child, I saw my mother literally struggle to make sure that I and my sister had the essentials that we needed. From a young age, I developed a desire to take care of my mother; however, there would be a few challenges and roadblocks in front of me. Fast forward to 9th grade, life literally changed for me. Dad wasn’t home or around and I was seeking validation from the wrong people. So what did I do? I joined a gang and I started selling drugs. This was only the beginning of a nightmare. Due to my involvement with being in a gang and drugs, I begin to flunk school. I was a straight “F” student, the only class I maintained an “A” in was Physical Education. Don’t get it twisted, I was very smart and intelligent. Often times I was disinterested because I always felt like I was in a class with average people and considering the fact that I was making more money than my teachers at the time, why should I pay attention? As I began to approach 11th grade, I started having college preparation meetings with my guidance counselor and considering my grades and overall academic history, I was told I wasn’t fit for college and I should learn a trade because I wasn’t college material. This was a turning point for me. After this conversation with my guidance counselor, I dropped out of high school. I thought this would be so easy; however, it ended up being one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. What was so hard about it? When I told my mom I dropped out of high school, this was the first time in my life that I’ve ever witnessed my mother cry. This did something to me. I was depressed for two weeks straight. Despite the gang involvement and drug operation, I was ultimately affected by my mother’s response to me dropping out of high school. I was depressed for two weeks straight. After two weeks of being depressed, I developed the courage to make all the wrong things right in my life. This was my good turning point. I was done with gang activity as well as selling drugs. I knew I couldn’t go back to high school so my last option left was to obtain my GED. I convinced my mother to pay for my test. She told me she would pay for it one time only so I better pass my test. I attended the GED preparation class for 1 day and I told my instructor that I was ready to test. My instructor advised that I stay in the class for a few more weeks because the test would be extremely difficult. I insisted that I test as soon as possible.

The following week, I tested and five days after my test, my instructor calls and asks that I meet him at his office. He tells me to sit down in front of his desk and he then slides a folder in front of me. He then tells me in all of his 10 years of being a GED instructor, he’s never witnessed this. He then opens up the folder and shows me my scores. I scored an 800 which is the highest you can score when score needed to obtain my GED was a 580. I wasn’t too surprised. I always knew I was smart and intelligent, I just had to apply myself. That day, I took my score results home to my mother and she was overjoyed and extremely proud of me. I corrected my wrong and made it right. I also attended a 4-year college in Atlanta to the counselor that told me I wasn’t college material! Fast forward, the feeling I got when I saw my mother smile made me want to keep that smile on her face. Age 18, I developed a goal. My goal was to pay my mothers mortgage of $1,100 per month. How could I accomplish this goal? The answer to this question ultimately shifted the course of my life. Real estate investing provided me with the opportunity to accomplish this goal. I legitimized my figures. I took $100K of my drug money and started flipping real estate properties. My first year in business at only age 18, my business grossed $675,000. Paying my mothers mortgage became forgettable. The business was so great, I forgot the money came out of my business account.

From then until now, I have established a real estate portfolio valued at $8M and my company has expanded to establish multiple businesses outside of the real estate sector. Disclaimer, this was not easy. This accomplishment required a lot of consistency, dedication and hard work. I didn’t work a 9-5, instead, I worked a 24/7. Needless to say, every sacrifice I made was absolutely worth it. Funny how God will give you beauty for your ashes, right? I’m forever grateful.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My journey has been the complete opposite of smooth. In the medical field, ups and downs are a sign of life; flatline is a sign of death. The struggles that I’ve faced are far too many but the biggest one was growing to love myself. After my dad left, I felt rejected, abandoned and neglected. It ultimately led me to an identity crisis. I didn’t love me, let alone I didn’t fully know or understand me. Houses, cars, money nor women couldn’t fix this issue. This struggle required real healing. How did I overcome this struggle? Clinical counseling was a game changer. In the black community, counseling is always frowned upon; however, it really helped me. Somethings you can’t think your way out of, you have to communicate and talk your way out of. Counseling provided me with the opportunity to conquer this giant of a struggle.
