Meet Jill Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Lewis.

Jill, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I remember sharing with my mom when I was 12 that I when I was older, I wanted to listen and help people with their problems, not knowing what a therapist was or what they actually did. I started out as an early childhood education major and slowly realized young children and large classrooms weren’t for me. I preferred the one on one interaction. After undergrad, I went to grad school for educational psychology thinking I would do testing but realizing, I did not want to work with young children at all and ultimately desired to be out of the school system. That lead me to social work and a masters thesis on the media’s influence on adolescent body image. This is how I landed in the world of body image and eating disorders. I was lucky enough to land jobs at some of the best eating disorder facilities in the country and honed my clinical skills. I have been fortunate to also take on many managerial roles in my lifetime, so as I got more into private practice, I realized I wanted to supervise and manage. As my business grew, I took on more and more associates, guiding, molding, and supervising young clinicians to learn, grow and expand their own businesses. I love working with clients, but I also love supervising. I get to use a different part of my brain and I love helping young clinicians find their voice and their journey in this field. I feel so blessed that I get to do what I love every day.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road, but I do think I have navigated it quite well. I had a general knowledge about how to grow and expand a business. I also had the people and clinical skills to be a good clinician along the way. The biggest challenge was when my accountant told me I owed thousands in taxes from the past year and this upcoming year because I wasn’t paying enough in quarterly’s throughout the year. That was quite a learning curve.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
J Lewis Therapy is a group therapy practice working from a psychodynamic perspective. Which means we seek to understand your past to make sense of your present. We have offices in Atlanta and New York City, with incredible clinicians always seeking to grow, learn, and expand their knowledge. We specialize in eating disorders, depression, anxiety, life transitions, family dynamics, group therapy, and infertility. What sets us apart is our compassion, knowledge, and dedication. My team develops long term relationships with their clients. They are not trying to fix and solve each client, they are helping to foster and grow relationships, which is what so many of our clients struggle with. We are giving them interpersonal tools to navigate the world by creating healthy attachment by modeling healthy boundaries and relationships. What I am most proud of, is that we are a business in a world that is often not sure how to be a business. Therapists are often unsure about how to navigate the business side, and we do that really well, which is why I feel we are successful.

What was you like growing up?
I was always extroverted, loved playing tennis, socializing, hanging with friends. I have always been inquisitive about the world, people and the relationships around me, nothing has really changed.
