Today we’d like to introduce you to Wesley Whaley.
Wesley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, I was the child in class obsessed with coloring inside of the lines and making sure I used the perfect color crayon. At home, my parents would buy me coloring and activity books featuring my favorite cartoon characters like the “Looney Toons” or “Scooby-Doo.” In high school and college, instead of actively paying attention during lessons, I would sketch characters and cartoons.
It wasn’t until some legal trouble in 2014 that I decided to focus my efforts completely on perusing my art career. From then on, I made a conscious decision to use my creative talents for the side of good and never looked back.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When I decided to pursue art as a career, I knew that it wouldn’t be easy but given the opportunity to chase a dream I decided any pitfalls along the way would be worth it. Fortunately, I’ve been blessed with supportive family and friends who are there to reassure me the times I doubt myself.
Last year, I went through a period of painters block, that in combination with the stresses of life left me completely unmotivated to paint. However I could not stop my mind from creating so I started making key chains, knick-knacks, and sculptures from recycled materials. The process of concentrating solely on creating something that made me happy instead of the outside forces bringing me down I feel helped rehabilitate me to my former self.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Toy|Soldier – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in creating textured art intended to be enjoyed by all including the visually impaired. My goal is to eventually create a space that will be inclusive in a way I personally haven’t seen in the art community. Art that is meant to be touched – an experience in galleries that’s either unavailable or we take for granted.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m putting together an art show and concert with local artists for late July early August. I am also going to feature at “Pancakes & Booze” on July 16th.
