Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendal Foster.
Kendal, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Troy, AL, raised in Atlanta, Ga. I have always been into music, starting with the band, in which I played in the drumline. From my drumming, I earned TV spots on Drumline 2, BET’s The Quad, and OWN’s Greenleaf. I began rapping and making my own music at 16. I rapped through high school, and into college, which was Troy University. I went to school for about three years before I realized it was not for me. I came back to Atlanta and began rapping and hitting the scene hard. I was Ken1 back then, but I was grinding, doing lots of open mics and lots of networking. After not getting far, I decided to get into engineering, so I could make myself self-sufficient as an artist. I moved back to Troy for a year. I got my own apartment and opened a studio in my living room. I recorded artist after artist, looking to improve on my engineering skills. I was not making any music at this time. Once I felt I was good enough, I moved back to Atlanta because as I told myself, “I want to be in a real studio.” Once I moved back, I was blessed with an internship opportunity at Icon Studios Atl. I worked as an engineer intern for three years before I was promoted to Studio Manager – Head Engineer, which is my current job. Cashjunky Baby, really came about in 2018 when I started rapping again. I decided to change my name from Ken1 to Cashjunky in order to honor my friend “Luh Cobi,” who was killed in 2012. The Cashjunky Brand is a total dedication to him and what he stood for when it comes to music.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Its been a gravel road. When I say that I mean, it has been a grind. I love it tho. I love music, so it’s not a work grind. It’s a peaceful grind. It’s a purposeful grind. I have bad days when being a rapper seems like a dead end goal that will never ever happen. I have issues with the budget, like most indie artist. I have to be a one-man team, essentially. But im moving in purpose so it’s still amazing. It’s about the journey, not the destination.
CASHJUNKY BABY – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am an artist and music engineer. I specialize in urban music. Im most proud of how far I have come, even tho as you live it progression seems so slow. I believe my versatility and work ethic set me apart from others. I can do this and this and fix this and this and still be an artist after that. I dont call myself a producer but I can producer as well. I try to always “be like water.”
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is total peace in YOUR OWN mind. There are miserable millionaires and happy poor people. Its all about how your mind perceives life. I will be successful in my mind when I can change the life of everyone around me. I want to be THE CHANGE for everybody around me. That drives me. If I can impact you, you will remember me forever. I want a legacy.
