Meet Bon Allinson of A Drug Called Tradition

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bon Allinson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Music has always been a passion of mine as far back as I can remember. My father sang in a metal band in the 80s, my uncle played guitar, and my grandad was a record collector. I was introduced to Pink Floyd as a child and became obsessed. Their experimental approach to songwriting was very appealing to me. The textures and sounds really turned me on! I got my first electric guitar when I was 9 and that was it.

I have a twin brother who shared the same love for music as I did. We played together for most of our lives and started a band after high school called Abby GoGo. I grew up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It’s a college town that had a decent art scene and a couple of bars that catered to original music but, I felt relocating to a bigger city would be beneficial to the music we were making at the time. So in 2007, I relocated to Atlanta.

I was young and wild and dove head first into the scene that was Atlanta in the late 00’s. Abby GoGo had some good years but, In 2014 my brother had to get out of the city and put the music down for a little while. That’s when A Drug Called Tradition started. It was birthed out of the chaos that was Abby GoGo. I picked up with drummer Puma Navarro (who was already playing in Abby GoGo) and the lovely Asha Lakra
(Tikka, wife) on bass and vocals.

We began work on the songs that became 2017s “Medicine Music” (psych army intergalactic) and have been playing together ever since, and are currently working on the next album.

My brother recently moved back to Atlanta so we’ve been working on some new Abby GoGo material as well.

Has it been a smooth road?
Let’s just put it this way…. “it’s a long way to the top of you want to rock n’ roll”.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
With A Drug Called Tradition, I’m the primary songwriter. It’s my vision. I’ve been blessed with two talented people to share my vision with. They have stuck with me and allowed me to find my way. I’m just proud that we still get to create together. In the short time we’ve been together I’ve seen bands come and go. What sets us apart? We are still standing.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Of course. Atlanta is a great city! That’s why I moved here. As far as someone starting out here I’d say.. if music is something you are passionate about you are going to create it regardless of where you are. You do it because you can not do it.
