Today we’d like to introduce you to Massiel Nunez.
Massiel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up; I always loved writing and I always loved being in front of a camera. I would always write short stories and make homemade videos and movies. I knew that whatever I did growing up would have to include one of the two. I was fortunate enough to always be very clear on what my passions were. The number one thing was that I always believed I could make my dreams happen. One of the main dreams of mine was to work for myself. I always believed I was too creative for a 9-5. After graduating high school; I learned about broadcast journalism and was thrilled to find a major that combined videography and writing. I currently attend Kennesaw State and am still pursuing my degree. That same year that I graduated high school; I started my Youtube Channel and loved being comfortable in front of the camera and creating my own content. I got even more excited when I realized that I could make some money from it. I also began writing poetry as a coping mechanism and in 2017, I officially published my own poetry book “She.” I was slowly becoming an entrepreneur.
In 2016, I wanted to do something that would be a lifetime career. I had an internship with a local magazine and gained a lot of experience from it. In 2018, I realized I had a different vision from that magazine; resulting in me quitting and making the decision to start my own magazine. It was a huge risk because I didn’t know what I was doing at first. But here we are a couple of months later. My amazing mom, Justina bought me the rights to our name and my supportive boyfriend, Tay bought me my logo. I became the proud owner of ‘PULP Magazine’, have a team of AMAZING interns, and we are growing as a business every single day.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In my second book; I came up with the quote “The end result of success is a beautiful thing, but the way you get there can be the ugliest process.” Through this process; I learned that with success there are no handouts and that expectations lead to disappointment. There have been countless nights I have cried and wanted to give up because it gets so hard. In between keeping up with my magazine, feeling behind on my goals, school, keeping a balance with my family, friends and work; it can be frustrating. There have been times where I have had to recognize my flaws and where I am lacking. I have people around me who hold me accountable and toughen me up like my Mom, my best friend Jenni, my boyfriend Tay, my aunt Melissa, and my brother Ariel. But the end goal has always kept me motivated and I’ve learned to cry it out thing get back to work. I’m lucky to have my family, friends, boyfriend, and supporters to keep me motivated.
Please tell us about PULP Magazine.
I am the proud owner of PULP Magazine. We are an online magazine based in Atlanta that covers the latest news in Music, Sports, Fashion, Beauty and Pop Culture. I specialize in overseeing the articles that are being produced and I network to build a clientele for future interviews and articles. I am most proud of my interns and team. My best friend Jenni has been by my side through the entire process and helps orchestrate our growing Instagram account DAILY with our intern Ivan. All of my interns work hard and deserve so much recognition because they come up with great ideas and topics. I am proud of watching people get out of their comfort zones. I am so proud that we are not just a company but a family who motivates each other and truly want to grow. What sets us apart from other local magazines is that “we got the juice.” We are on top of what’s going on in the world around us. We aren’t gossipy or biased, we simply want to educate and put out the news. I am SO proud of my magazine and all of my interns that helped it come as far as it has.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory as a child was the family trips my mom put together for my brother or I. At one point, she was working three jobs and still managed to make sure my brother and I had a family trip to look forward to every year.
I also always loved fishing with my dad and aunt Melissa and binge-watching cheesy horror films with him.
