Meet Kevin Davidson of GODGVEN (God Given) in West Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Davidson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kevin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My love for the arts and creating was evident since I was a child. I’ll even go so far as giving credit to my mother for praying over my hands when I was born. Her prayer was that I would use my hands to be creative and in turn, that I would impact the world. She told me that story when I was probably about 16 years old and it never left me.

Since that time, I’ve spent hours, days, weeks, years creating in some fashion or another. In life, I believe there are necessary crossroads or what I call divine moments of alignment that usher you to another level within your gifts or passion. It’s one thing to create for the sake of creating and it’s another thing to translate that into a business. Being an entrepreneur, as a creative, is a WHOLE world of bumps and bruises. (laughs) I think our ability to go into our “flow state” is one of our greatest strengths, however, that does leave room for some people like myself to forget the business side of things.

Around 2005/2006, I was given the opportunity, along with five other guys (originally), to create a full-scale multi-media company from the ground up called Focus Media. I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge those who played a vital role in building that business. A HUGE thank you and shout out to Dwight Stewart, Doran Francis, Shawn Ferguson, Nathanael Davidson, Robert Laneau, Amos Seide, Kareem Waugh, Kirby Trim. Working, learning, failing, growing for those 3-5 years taught me so much regarding the flow of business. Even though we ended up closing down that venture after some time, it gave us all a wealth of knowledge that we carried over into our own business and personal lives, which as a result are thriving today!

I believe it was that opportunity that served as the catalyst for what I’m doing now. Getting into branding, design, marketing, and consulting was a direct result serving in those roles at Focus Media.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life isn’t a smooth road, (laughs) so I could have never expected to be an entrepreneur to be smooth. It’s interesting though; still, in the back of my mind, I had this slight misconception that it was supposed to be an easy road to travel. I think, if we’ll admit it, we’ve all had that sense (at one time or another) that the way we planned or envisioned our business, it was supposed to go that way.

Personally, the challenges for me (I don’t necessarily like to call them struggles), but the challenges were due to my lack of knowledge or ignorance to certain key principles regarding life, relationships, and business. I think one of my biggest personal challenges/issues was in the area of communication. This included being a person of my word, knowing my own personal boundaries and communicating them in a clear way. Also, knowing the things I could and couldn’t handle. I’ve come to learn that the quality and clarity of your personal life WILL reflect in the life of your business. Your business practices, work ethic, communication; it’s a direct reflection of the work you’ve done or have not done internally.

So for me, the challenges weren’t necessarily the business itself but the challenges I faced internally, that manifested within my business dealings.

Please tell us about GODGVEN (God Given).
So, GODGVEN is simply a creative agency dedicated to the purpose of taking what gifts we are given, whatever talents and resources we possess, and using them for the betterment of humanity.

We specialize in branding and design. Through photography, graphic design, web design, brand consultation: Our mission is to create a clear and compelling visual identity, that tells a story for personal brands, businesses, and organizations. Through that visual representation, we know that there will be those who will identify with your brand and in turn, you will be able to serve those individuals.

I think that’s what sets us apart; the fact we are invested in purpose AND service. I believe with all my heart that every individual on this earth is wired with purpose. If we can use what we’ve been given to better the lives of others around us, isn’t that a beautiful and fulfilling thing?

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory was living in Wiesbaden, Germany. I think it was a time that I clearly remembered the beauty and design in nature, along with the design aesthetic of the city. It made me fall in love with drawing buildings for that very reason. I remember being able to go out and see rolling lush hills and the farmlands around where we lived. It sparked a visible presence of creativity in me that I’ll never forget.
