Meet Jazmine Robinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazmine Robinson.

Jazmine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised on the south side of Atlanta in a small town called McDonough, GA. I started formal dance and vocal training at age four. In between vocal lessons, my mom would drive me 45 minutes to Moreland Ave every other day to take class at Dance 411. It was right next to Little Azios when the studio first opened. We would go grab pizza after every class. I can still hear her as I took bites of my thin crust cheese, “Stop performing like you’re cute! Perform like you’re ugly and got somethin’ to prove.” I would eternally moan and continue practicing and training slowly graduating to performing in talent shows and small concerts by age seven. I even started a group with my best friend, Zonnique, we were called QT Possie. (Qute and Talented Possie) Growing through my teen years, it was a constant push. I started performing by myself and growing confidence in who I was. “Got somethin’ to prove” was my motto, but it all came full circle in recent years. I was given the opportunity to tour and work with amazing artists such as Tamar Braxton, Tammy Rivera and, the legendary, Xsacpe, across the United States, dancing, and choreographing. But none of these successes were able to detour me from the initial vision that was initially set when I was in Little Azio going over notes from training. Now, performing by my real name, “Jazmine” geared with a lot more experiences, I have more of a story for not only myself but also other young women. My debut EP entitled Ocean release late fall 2019.

Has it been a smooth road?
My biggest struggle was finding my voice. Being in Atlanta, running into a celebrity isn’t uncommon. As a kid, my family lived down the street from Tiny’s (of Xscape) mom. I and Zonnique became friends because we were just neighborhood kids. That eventually lead to a tight-knit family that I would have still to this day with Xscape members and Tamar Braxton. I got to witness the behind the scenes version of the industry. Back then, I would sit in the rehearsals and study them with my eyes. But being around so much success sometimes had me lost as to where I fit into all of it. It took time and pressure, but the mousey QT eventually would find her way.

What do you do? What do you specialize in?
I am an R&B singer/dancer. I am probably most proud of my ability to be able to adapt. I’ve been so many other roles besides the one in the front with the spotlight from assistant to background dancer to choreographer. I find honor in being able to play those roles but still, play my part. I think what sets me apart the most from others is my personality. Since a kid, I always wanted people to feel good, about where they are and themselves. I feel that same way when I’m performing and releasing music for people to enjoy.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The shift is already among us with digital streaming. This will influence money making to not just being about music, but about the brand, the difference between major and independent labels will get smaller, ownership over masters, but overall giving music artist an even playing field.
