Meet Jazmine Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazmine Williams.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was always interested in artistic expression. I can draw really, really well. I consider it a natural talent that I was born with. So, I always had an eye for art and the intricate details within it. It’s funny because one summer while I was back at my parents for summer break from college (I am a native of Nashville, Tennessee), I just started watching YouTube to pass the summer by. I was so antsy to get back to Atlanta as I attended and also would go on to graduate from Clark Atlanta University. YouTube taught me so much. I would practice every day on myself. A lot of times, I would not even be going anywhere but I would have on a full face of makeup. It was enjoyable for me because it was art. Over time, however, people would stop me about my makeup and how much they loved it. People started inquiring almost every day. I even was getting asked by the local MAC counter to apply. My first real paying client was actually a roommate of mine my sophomore year of college. I remember feeling so amazing because I got paid for something I was good at. It was a euphoric feeling that I really will never forget.

I did take a very extended break from makeup, however, focusing on school and just living in the moment. However, after I graduated, I was working for a very well known insurance company and it was horrible. I despised it and every day felt as if I was forcing myself into work. I left there and went to work for one of the most notable telecommunications companies and that was even worse. It was then that I realized, I need to take makeup seriously and push myself to live the life I always dreamed. I had learned quickly on that in order to be truly happy, I needed to live in my purpose and after I left the telecommunications company, I made it my mission to always keep my purpose at the forefront and when I did that, my company and my brand soared rapidly, even more rapidly than I had originally game planned for.

Now, my work has been on red carpets for BET, video interviews, photo shoots, and music video shoots.

Has it been a smooth road?
Not even in the slightest has it been a smooth road for me. I lost sleep. I am still sleep deprived. I still work full time (for another month) while doing makeup. So, a typical schedule for me includes waking up at about 7 am and going to work, leaving work to do makeup and then going home. Sometimes, I do appointments before I go in. I’ve had quite a few days where I do makeup early morning, go to work eight hours and then do makeup after work as well. My weekends are tied up with appointments as well. So, the downtime that many get with traditional jobs I simply do not get. I never complain, however, because I know that one day I will be able to afford two weeks of no work if I want and I can catch up on sleep and downtime then.

I have had difficult clients. I have not had many but I have had them. I also have spent way more money than many would assume investing in my business from equipment to products to branding and imaging and also attending master classes and workshops. It was difficult, especially in the beginning, because I was financially putting in more than half of what I actually got back on the investment. However, I never allowed that to hinder me. Instead, it actually motivated me. Every time a client would book with me, I would use that as proof that I really can do this and live off of being a makeup artist.

There were months were I wouldn’t book a single appointment. It was hard not to be discouraged during that time but I knew my capabilities and I knew my skill set and before I knew it, I went from not booking a single appointment to booking over 10 a month while still working a full time job.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Jazmine Williams Makeup Artistry story. Tell us more about it.
Jazmine Williams Makeup Artistry is a company that truly focuses on the art behind the canvas. I specialize in making sure the clients’ skin appears healthy and airbrushed with the makeup on and that starts from the base and the prepping of the skin. I am known for glowing skin and making the makeup really melt into the skin rather than simply sit on top of it. This is what produces the best quality photos but also the best wear, especially if the makeup is going to be worn the majority of the day. I believe what sets me apart from others is I thoroughly enjoy every part of the makeup application process. I enjoy prepping the skin, creating intricate eye shadow looks, cleaning up lip liner, blending out the skin for several minutes to ensure a seamless blend, and every other step that is needed for a flawless application. Every single part of the process is important to me and I treat it as such. I wouldn’t allow my client to leave my chair if I did not feel that my client would be even the slightest bit unpleased about any part of the process.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see makeup becoming even more revolutionary than it is now. Obviously now it is in high demand but I see it expanding far beyond that in the coming years. As the amount of movies, documentaries, and television shows continues to increase, I see makeup being an absolute necessity. I do believe that we will start seeing more futuristic inspired makeup looks and just overall, more vibrancy in the looks created. I think color is going to really take over the makeup industry in the next few years.
