Today we’d like to introduce you to MeShaun Wallace.
MeShaun, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been designing and making clothes since I was 17. I knew it was my calling when I went to my junior prom and saw that I had on the same dress as three other girls, so I vowed my senior year of high school that I would design and make my dress for prom. When I did and saw the reaction of my classmates, I know this is what God destined me to be.
As soon as I graduated, I started my business at 18 under the name “Meshaun Denise”, which is my first and middle name, I had much success with it, showcasing my line around the country. In 2017, I wanted to create a new brand that was fresh, exciting, and out of the box, so after months of planning, I closed the Meshaun Denise phase of my business and created MeMe Collective.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was a difficult road at first because here I am, this 18 year old that just knew how to design and sew, and thorough research, and eventually going to Fashion college at age 23, I had to learn the basics of business so that way I could protect what I love the most, which is my brand. I was the definition of a broke art student- I had no money because I worked two jobs with the help of my grandmother and took three buses every day from school to work across town to put myself through college. I was fortunate to work at two clothing stores, so not only was I getting the book work but also I was getting the real-life experience. I have had people steal my designs, people pretending to want to help me with my business in the hope of taking over, but through all of that, I wouldn’t trade my experience for anything in the world because it made me who I am today, not only as a woman, but as a designer and it kept me humble, even still to this day.
MeMe Collective Clothing – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
MeMe Collective is a clothing brand that specializes in one of a kind pieces that are unconventional, something that you would see in a magazine and be like “That is so cool, I wish I could wear that.” Our handmade, custom clothing and handbags draw influence from everything- culture, food, music, you name it. we are known for our out of the box outfits and our bright fur clutches. What I am most proud of as a company, is that we pride ourselves on not following trends, but creating them. What sets us apart is that I am very hands-on and that we cater to all sizes, from 0-24, we make sure you feel your best in our clothing.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment was when I won Best Fashion Designer at the CMBEA award and when I went to California to show my most recent collection, we won Best Online Boutique from Lue Productions at the Urban Fashion and music event.
