Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ KC.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a child, I’ve always been into music. At one point I was writing, producing in middle school, and now, I DJ in high school. In my freshman year of high school, I always went to the pep rallies. I saw how the DJ, DJ Epic, would control the crowd and I knew that one day I wanted to do the same. The summer after my freshman year, my mom bought me a beginner’s controller. That summer, I worked very hard on understanding the software and the controller. My sophomore year of high school, I started posting videos of me DJing on Instagram which created a buzz among my peers. My sophomore year is also the year I met DJ Epic which is now like my mentor/big brother. I have been working very hard since I started and am now going into my junior year with many blessings and opportunities.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Honestly, it has not been that much of a bumpy road, but that doesn’t mean that it has been easy. It was hard trying to convince people that I was a female DJ or that I was trying to pursue music. Often, people would laugh or not believe me, so my advice to other young women who are starting their journey in music or in any other type of male-dominated industry is to let your work speak for you and believe in yourself. A lot of people won’t believe in you because you are a female. They won’t feel like you can do what you want to do, but you have to make sure that you are the best at what you do to prove them wrong. Women are naturally creators. We create because it is what we do best, so don’t ever let anybody tell you that you can’t do something or you are not good at what you do. Though it may seem hard to dominate in a male-dominated world, you have to persevere and make others believe what you believe. If you don’t believe in yourself nobody else will.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am best known for DJing. A lot of people have been referring to me as DJ KC or the DJ girl. I don’t complain because I know this is what I asked for, so I’m proud of the name that I have built for myself and I’m glad that people have recognized me as so. I’m proud of the direction I am going. I’m different from others because I am genuine. That’s what’s wrong with a lot of people these days. They like to do things that they don’t normally do or act a different way to fit in with people. I don’t care. I will say what I want, I’ll do what I want and I’ll dress the way I like because it’s just easier to be myself.
