Meet Avont Garcia of Avontsart in Norcross

Today we’d like to introduce you to Avont Garcia.

Avont, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was a baby, my sister and I who at the time was five were separated and taken away from my mother. We were in fact until both of us were given to families. I was three, she was five. I got to leave with my dad and his girlfriend. My sister, on the other hand, was forced to move to New Hampshire with her new family. I grew up for the first eight years of my life in my hometown Lowell, Massachusetts. I’ve always been interested in drawing but was never as good as the other kids in my class. I wasn’t even good at making friends (never really have been). I moved to Georgia in 2003 after my parents decided to follow my step-siblings over here. I have an on-off relationship with my biological siblings whom I have not met in person only by phone. I was the one who reached out to them. In 2015, I decided to quit drawing because I met this married woman at work and we started dating, after I broke up with her, she set my car on fire. Inside the car was my sketchbook with some valuable work to me. I decided to give up because I thought I had lost it all. The year after, I got motivated and started drawing again, but this time, I was doing it every day, sometimes forcing myself to even if I wasn’t feeling it. I slowly started getting better and people around me started noticing my improvement. It was in 2017 that I decided that this is what I’d rather do for the rest of my years instead of wasting my life away sitting behind a cubicle or taking orders from somebody I don’t even respect like most people around the world.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. From being with married women who set my car on fire to being with another married woman who has a child that I have to take care of and forces me to ignore my art. Not to mention the fact that I ran off with her to California for three months (I came back alone). I took a big step and moved out of my parent’s house because I was tired of being so comfortable and stressed around them all the time. I figured that God has taken me to so many places and gotten me out of so many bad situations that I would be just fine.

Please tell us more about your artwork, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I specialize in visual arts, from graphite portraits to watercolor as well as inks. I find that unlike most people I have various styles of drawing and use different mediums, most people just stick to their one “thing” I used to find myself conflicted because of this, but I’ve learned to accept that that’s just how my brain works. It makes me feel special and gives me more of a drive.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My work has been recognized by various celebrities.
