Today we’d like to introduce you to Randie and Paul (Mikey) Chapman.
Randie and Paul, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We began dating in 2008, got married in 2016, and came up with the idea to start our podcast when we found out we were pregnant at the start of 2018.
We agreed that the podcast would be about our journey as parents, but when we suffered a miscarriage our plans changed. Both of us were on the fence about still pursuing the podcast, but our family encouraged us to start one anyway.
In April of 2018, the Black Millennial Marriage podcast was conceived and instead of focusing on our parenting journey, our focus became about all we’re learning, unlearning, and loving about marriage.
Soon, the podcast became a form of therapy for us. It kept us connected and allowed us to see that there were other couples around the world that related to our story.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nah.
While the podcast remains our consistent source of joy and expression, life has thrown a few loopholes.
After our loss, we got pregnant again, and while it was a welcome surprise, it was sudden and unexpected. Later in 2018, we experienced job loss, career changes, and downsizing while preparing to bring a new life into this world.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Black Millennial Marriage Podcast – what should we know?
We are the Black Millennial Marriage podcast.
We host a series of podcast episodes centered around our journey as a couple and new parents who also happen to be black millennials. We specialize in transparency and honesty through our attempts at bravery and sharing our struggles that relate to the everyday person.
If you ask our listeners, we’re known for our unique segments such as our fight or flights where one of us will bring a problem with the other to the table. We’re also known for our PDA segment where we take the time to love one another and encourage others to do the same.
We’re most proud of our commitment to each other and we’re happy that our devotion translates well through the podcast. We’re also proud of the listeners we have and the relationships we’re building with them. We’re happy to know they find our content as valuable as they do.
In our opinion, what sets us apart from others is our story. We started off as kids from Atlanta who saw something special in each other. We dedicated ourselves to one another and created a podcast simply because we like talking to one another. We didn’t start our podcast with a large following, however, we’ve managed to build a unique community that’s steadily growing.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We believe that there are many people who have aided us in our success.
Our family and friends who make up our village have supported our relationship from the beginning. They hold us accountable and require us to do the hard work needed to have a healthy marriage. Their love has been a light and a blessing and they’re part of the reason why our podcast does so well. They’ll be the first ones to tell us when we need to change, keep, or improve something, and it’s always for the better. Before the launch of our podcast, they even helped us buy the equipment. We’re incredibly thankful for all they’ve done for us.
Our listeners are also responsible for our success. We love them because they’re incredibly honest and open about their own trials and tribulations. Their openness to expose themselves gives us the courage to do the same.
