Today we’d like to introduce you to Nyla Vamp.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well, I was born and raised 1 often to my parents in south-central Los Angeles. At a young age, I was already bright and very talented. My mother enrolled me in school one year early and put me in dance and acting classes. I got a great chance to work on my gifts as a young girl and that carried me all the way Into college where I majored in dance.
After leaving school, I went on to writing poetry and performing spoken word. I eventually ran into a now good friend of mine who introduced me to recording and performing hip hop music. I eventually got into a rap group with four other women called Kitty Kitty and we use to record and perform at local parties and clubs.
One day, I received a message from a woman online who thought I was very talented and she asked me to come to Atlanta to attend a celebrity party with me. She sent for me and once I arrived, my life began to change.
I decided to leave Los Angeles and move to Atlanta when I was 24. I got with some producers from Miami and we started making music and shaping my sound as an individual artist. I began hitting the local independent artist circuit and performing my new music at open mics.
I didn’t take long to get a buzz growing and social media really started to take off. I was being invited to host events and you could find me at all the grand openings and music release parties going on around town. A part of me got a little carried away with the partying and I began talking about my experiences on social media.
My fans really started paying attention when I became transparent and real about the things I was going through and things that I’ve overcome in life. I got into doing a bit of charity work and through that, I met more people who helped me progress.
One of the men I met, owned a studio and invited me to guest host a tv show they were doing. By the end of the night, they offered me a gig hosting their show Destination Hip Hop. On the show, I interviewed hip-hop artist and there is a music video and did a live performance. There is no other show airing locally in Atlanta like it. It came on Wednesday at midnight.
It was soo cool to see myself once a week on the tv. I looked really good and my character and personality read very well. I was hooked. That’s when I decided to go full fledge into television and film. I was made for entertainment and my passion today is in acting.
As of today, I am focused on my career as an actor. I love music, dance, and modeling but acting is where my passion has fallen. Atlanta is a great place to do it. As a child, I was in commercials for brands like Tylenol, breakfast cereal and Barbie, so it’s kind of cool to get back to what my parents wanted for me.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I can read a trilogy on all the obstacles that I’ve overcome. I think the biggest one for me was first believing in myself. Imagine How all of my friends and family responded when I told them a woman on Facebook told me to move to Atlanta to get into the music industry. They thought I was crazy, who leaves Los Angeles to become rich and famous in Atlanta?
Secondly, one of the biggest mistakes I made was spending my money in the wrong places. When It came to my music I should’ve focused more on marketing and promotions. I was too busy getting ripped off paying for things that didn’t matter.
Thirdly, it’s important to be true to yourself not just believing yourself but be you! nobody can be you but you. everything around us tells us we’re not smart enough, we’re not beautiful enough, we’re not slim enough or we’re not talented enough! We are just not good enough. Perfection is a distraction. Nobody is perfect so just be the best you. You can be and if people don’t like it they don’t need to be in your life.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m known for being an actress/socialite and social media influencer. I started off as a music artist as time went on I decided to focus on acting. The only thing that set me apart from the next person is my tenacity and determination. I see who I’m supposed to become and I won’t stop until I manifest everything I dream of.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I feel that women are stepping up and taking over. I just think it’s a lot of men who objectify women and don’t respect us as their equals. They think with the wrong head and try to hold women back if their masculinity is offended. It’s important for women to continue to speak up and support each other against oppression.
