Today we’d like to introduce you to Aly Humes.
Aly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve come to Atlanta for a majority of my life. For basketball tournaments, to see family, and now, I live here when I’m not at school. I was a really shy child and was always afraid to go out by myself at night. I grew up in Greenville, SC and the move to Atlanta really helped me grow out of how shy I was. Also, with the move, it’s given me a lot of material for the two novels I’m currently writing.
Has it been a smooth road?
I grew up poorer than most, but never went without. Single mom, two older sisters, and she always did the best she could. I think the biggest struggle I’ve faced in the last five years was tearing my ACL in 2016. It forced me to figure out who I was without sports. The move to Atlanta was probably a life-changing decision as well. I wouldn’t be the same person I am today without those two big life moments.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I work at Steve & Kate’s camp as a camp counselor. Working with kids in the community is super rewarding. We’ve got kids from all backgrounds and getting to be the person for them that I needed when I was younger is the best part of my job. Also getting to be a part of the community in a unique way is making me love Atlanta even more!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think Atlanta is a great place to start a business. There’s enough of a diverse demographic that you can really appeal to any crowd and be successful. Atlanta is a city of hustlers who never give up and if you’ve got that “work hard play hard” mentality, you fit right in.
