Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruthie Butler.
Ruthie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey with flowers started long before I actually picked up a pair of shears. My mother arranges flowers on the side, and so the seed was planted early on. It wasn’t until 2013 when I was lucky enough to intern with an amazing designer here in Atlanta, and I’ve been afforded the opportunity to learn under many of my heroes since. It all started with side-gigs, until recently when I transitioned into full-time.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Working with a perishable product certainly has its challenges, but that’s part of the beauty of floral design. Aside from that, it can be difficult to decide a pricing structure and to discern which types of projects you especially excel in and which you need to say “no” to. There have definitely been opportunities for improvement all along the way. When I define my goals, that helps the other pieces fall into place.
Please tell us about Rosmarin.
I specialize in events (that aren’t weddings) and editorial work. Currently, I’m working on a project I’m really excited about with my talented friend, Shannon Cole, who is a phenomenal photographer. More to come on that later. I’m most proud to be part of the flower community in Atlanta. I love the community as much as I love doing my job.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Find people whose work you admire, reach out to them, ask them to coffee or see if you can freelance or intern with them. Soak up all of the information you can.
